We enjoy both sports and think both would be good for our son to get involed with, unfortunately we only have time for one sport. Does anyone have any experience with which sport would be more fun and healthier for him, plus get out all of his extra energy?

I most definitely recommend soccer. That is what I started my four year old out in. It is not as rough, it definitely wears him out, and teaches him a lot of respect, morals and rules. He loves it too. Your son will get a whole lot of exercise because, unless he is goalie, he will get a whole lot of running in. I haven't done football yet, but he is doing T-ball this year at age 5 and I like it even better than soccer! Both sports are great though. We will do soccer again in the fall. Good luck and have fun... it's adorable to watch!

Both of my kids play soccer. It is less aggressive (at younger ages) than football. And there is a HECK OF ALOT more running in soccer than in football. My kids come home purple in the face after soccer practice and games. My daughter actually loses weight when she starts soccer season (which has continued for almost a year straight this year - All Stars & Tourney Team). We need to make her eat more food!!

I'm sure the "team" feeling is similar in both sports. Of course at a young age this is one of the main benefits of a team sport. In soccer both the offense and defense play at the same time - one team, where football isn't like that.

If you do go with soccer check to see if you have AYSO in your area. They are a national organization and well respected.

A four year old might have a hard time with football because of the catching and tackling and all the hand/eye coordination involved. I think soccer would be better for a child this age. Good luck!

Nope, you have to start by age 10 1/2. ;) There isn't an age at which one is too old to like sports, and if there is, that age isn't 11, more like 91. Yes, you should be doing something physical like a sport, and definitely have a hobby outside of just going to school.

Soccer it is better for this age. Less competitive and physical but will help them learn how to work as a team, how to follow instructions, and how to play a game with rules. My son did not start football until he was in 3rd grade (league rule here for safety).

4 year olds, in general, are pretty young for organized sports. Soccer is a lot of fun because they keep moving around.

have you asked him what he wants to do??? maybe he doesnt want to play sports...being a parent and a spectator of childrens sports for a great number of years i have found that most children will play a sport because a parent wants them to but not all enjoy them.

if you want him to be involved in athletics try your local ymca or recreation center both offer programs that are either called toddler/or preschool sport variety....they offer a chance for the young child to try several sports in a non competitive arena and give them a chance to make a good decision for themself.

also most professional persons who deal with this age group often suggest an individual sport to start children off with...as then this gives them more self confidence and boosts their self esteem.....maybe try swimming, martial arts, dance, or gymnastics these involve all of the muscle groups and every child is active for the entire practice and game time rather than sitting on the bench waiting for their turn on the field.

Well, football will be pretty rough for a 4 year old, especially if he will be playing with older kids, so, I think soccer would be better, but it depends if that's an issue for you. .
