He manages to spend it all every month and is also in debt for a few thousand. He lives in a small rent free home, owned by the family . I have tried and tried to get through to him that he really should save some money now that he has few obligations, and pay his debts asap to avoid interest charges etc. Now his long-term girlfriend is getting fed up with his attitude. They are thinking of living together, having a future together, but she is dismayed by his attitude to money. It's always 'I'll start saving one day, now I just want to enjoy spending my own money" She, in the meantime is doing her best to save for their future! Any advice ? (He's in his late twenties and insists that he sees his future with this girl, but tells us both to stop nagging.)

stop nagging...it's his life. he is in his late twenties..sometimes you have to learn lessons the hard way.....through experience. Want to force his hand? kick him out of the rent free home.....then he'll be forced to experience what life without money is all about....in order to pay rent..he'll have to budget.

He's almost thirty years old and you're still trying to run his life? And how's that working for you? It's hard for a parent to see their grown kids make poor choices but that's part of the learning process. As long as it's HIS money he wastes there's nothing you can do. However, don't bail him out by paying his debts. His choices become his responsibility. If the girl's thinking clearly, she'll move on to find someone who's matured and stable.

Yes. Quit being his safety net ,boot his butt out of the rent free home and MAKE him be a man.His g/f better think about this, if he does what he wants when he wants and spends his money like a drunken sailor then she will end up supporting him and since he isn't marrying her, she may end up raising a kid by herself. She better think it over.
