My new job is making me pass a credit check. I going to work in a bank. If I do not pass, I don't get the job.

I know the reason is because people with bad credit have the potential to steal from their employeers. However, isn't that discrimination?

I don't think I'll pass. I have bad credit, yet I would never steal. That's just wrong. I made mistakes regarding my credit and I must act as an adult and fix it. Stealing would only make my life worse. I would get caught and then have bad credit and be in jail.

Do you think it's wrong to discriminate against bad credit? Isn't that similar to saying, b/c someone is a certain race/ethnicity they have a higher chance of stealing. That woudl be racisim.

What do people think?

yes, i do think it is discrimination especially if you do not have any record of being a thief.

like you said, people make poor decisions when they are young or sometimes we just get way in over our heads.

how do they expect someone to clear their or fix the mistake
IF WE DON'T HAVE A JOB TO DO IT!!!! (i swear, some people just take their positions just a little to far).

Firstly, you are getting all upset over something that may never happen. How do you know that people with bad credit are not given jobs in a bank? Has anyone in a position of authority ever told you that?
A credit check is certainly a great idea for anyone who is going to be handling the public's money. But there are credit checks and there are credit checks. If you made mistakes with your credit card, have you corrected them? Can you show that you learned from the experience?
If you simply overcharged your card and weren't able to pay it off as quickly as you should have, that is a whole different matter than someone who has been involved in frauds and deliberately set out to cheat and steal.
In any case, even if bad credit did turn out to be a reason for denying you employment, it would not be discrimination. Discrimination involves something you can do nothing about - you can't change your race, you can't change your enthnicity. But you can certainly change your spending habits.
Sorry, but as far as I'm concerned, you're barking up the wrong tree.

If you're working with money or potentially sensitive information, such as in a bank, having a credit check is perfectly acceptable.
But in general, they're not looking at it the way a lender would for a loan application. They generally don't care if your credit score is 750 or 300 - they're more concerned with do you handle responsibility - meaning: are you paying your bills or flushing them down the toilet? Someone who is consistently 90 days or more late on paying their Visa bill might not make a good employee because they can't be counted on to get to work on time every day. Someone who has a boatload of debt, but has only been late paying two or three times in the last two years would be a little more reliable in the eyes of an employer because they're making an honest effort.

No, it is discrimination in the sense you are looking for. They are being discriminant in the hiring process but I do not believe having bad credit is what's called a "protected status," any more than having blonde hair, being fat, etc. Still, a judge may decide differently and set a precedent so if this were a small company, they might want to be concerned. Since it is a bank, and you have bad credit, they likely could bury you in terms of spending money bringing this to court so you wouldn't get very far, in my opinion.

My advice: While one can't change their race, you can improve your credit and then this won't be an issue for you in the future.

It is not discrimination even though it is a contradiction. Check out employment laws on google from Fair Labor Standards Act or FTC.gov. Also check employment laws in your state.
The federal laws enable credit checks for viability but state they cannot be the basis of employment decisions. This is the gray area. Meaning they cannot base poor credit solely as the basis of dismissal or not hiring but however, they can use it to factor a decision.
Most companies use a statement in their SOP that you acknowledge and sign waiving litigation for those checks. Also, they state that it is a contradiction in practice to employ poor credit and such.
Funny isn't it that you cant work in a bank with bad credit but you can work in the bank's recovery dept all the while with the same personal information access.
Stupid laws, but that's life.
Just wait till you see how much your insurance rates skyrocket with bad credit.

It may not be because they'll think you will steal but look at it this way: If you can not handle your responsibilities as an adult and pay off your credit card, house payment, etc... then how do they know that you will be on time for your job? or that you won't be lazy?

I'm not trying to say that you are lazy or any of that, its just something to think about

PS you can't choose your race/ethnicity/gender. You CAN choose how to handle your finances, so it's not discrimination

But more importantly, race and the others have nothing to do with the job, but are completely irrelevant.

Just as it's wrong to refuse to hire a woman as fireman, it isn't wrong to refuse to hire someone who isn't strong enough to do the work.

It's a matter of the relevance of the characteristic.

It's not discrimination when the judging is being done based on your actions. Your low credit rating means you're a risk, and they have every right to not want to take that risk.

kind of, i would say if that you dont have a crimenal record or sommat because of your bad credit check then it would be wrong not to give you the job based on that

hope you do get a good job though if you dont get that one

Yes i do think it is dicrimination. I to have bad credit thatnks to my ex . I have been turned down for every job that required a credit check even though I have a very good job hisory.
