Why do people usually start their statement by "...With ALL due RESPECT...", while the following statement clearly shows such disrespect?

Are they just saying that to avoid law suit, follow etiquette, or what?

They try to make something really disrespectful seem to be acceptable.

The same thing happens with: "No offense, but..."
It's irritating.

The phrase 'with all due respect' is meant to proceed a statement that you are saying to someone that is clearly an expert on a particular subject, but you are still going to disagree with them. If you use it in this respect then what you say next is not at all disrespectful, just contrary to what the other person believes is right.

I think that it's a way of saying that you disagree with whatever they've said but you don't want to be blatantly rude about it. Sure it's different if you say "with all due respect, I think you're an idiot!" That's different, so I guess it depends on how they say it and what follows.

"With all due respect" acknowledges that you respect the person and/or his opinion and/or his right to his opinion even though your own opinion differs and you feel the need to state it. Its a non-confrontational and civilized way to disagree. And its far more polite than starting your statement with "You stupid little man..."

They are covering their a**! Saying that seams to give people the go ahead to say what ever they want. They do not have the backbone to just say what is on their mind..they are weak.

It is easier to ask for forgiveness than to get permission.

It's just a polite statement!! They are not looking for an argument just an opportunity to discuss their views just as you had discussed your opinion on an issue. They are not disregarding your input.
