Well it all depends on what you want, if your going to put it in a small room then your better off with 5.1 or 2.1. If you want it more for the subwoofer then go with 2.1 or 5.1. Most likely you should probably get a 5.1 surround sound, 7.1 are pointless and only have 2 more speakers aint really to much of a diffrence plus the subwoofer wont hit as loud.

Hi there. Very simple . Do you want high quality sound or just surround sound ? You can't have both with a Receiver. The single power supply limits its performance. When 5 or more channels of amplification and a surround processor are getting all their power from the one power supply you end up with a piece of equipment that often tries to mask poor sound with sound effects..This is ok for movie sound effects, but it is not good enough for listening to music.Very few Receivers on the market pass as high fidelity sound reproducers and the ones that do are many times more expensive than your $300 or $400 units.Buying a separate Pre-Amp processor and Power Amps gets you on the way to having great music and surround sound which is not possible with a Receiver. And if the loudspeakers receive a poor quality signal from the Power Amp(s) no matter how good the speakers are they will not be able to improve on that signal . They only reproduce what they receive.

I prefer stereo, this is my opinion but Surround Sound isn't really worth it unless you can afford higher end systems or even an AV Reciever and some decent speakers
I would advise buying a stereo amp and speakers and getting some good quality cable

Also, don't forget that the only thing you are going to hear in 7:1 is 7:1 programming. Other than a handful of DVD's there's not really anything else being broadcast in 7:1.

7.1 make some sense for a large LONG room. Other than that - it is a waste of money. Invest few extra bucks into a better 5.1 system - get better front or center speaker. Or a better sub.

go for one that has hdmi ( upscales picture to look like hd, as long as you have hd tv ).
opticial input is a must, therefore if you get sky+ or hd then everything from the sky box will be in 5.1
