Probably slap her wrist and send her home- jails are overcrowded and they let people that have done worse off with a really short sentence (tell her NOT to do that anymore)

The first question is whether she is guilty or not. If not, don't let her get beaten down so that she confesses to something she didn't do (happens all the time).
They have to prove that she intentionally took something and left the store without paying for it.
If she was going to pay and forgot, things could go either way. Ronald Reagan proved that you can commit treason and get off by pleading that you don't remember. Taking merchandise and forgetting to pay for it is not treated near so lightly.
If she is guilty, then she will probably get probation and have to make restitution if the goods were not recovered.

You think it was her first time. Well you need to find a new friend. One , Two , Three times and she is out. Keep stealing and she will go to jail/prison. In some countries a theif would get the fingers chopped off.

It depends on what exactly she shoplifted and how much was the item worth. It is up to the judge to decide what the penalty would be.

It depends on: The color of the skin, the size of your wallet and if the judge is your next door neighbor
