Hello I immigrated to the US when I was 10. I recently graduated highschool and planning to go enlist in the navy, however I wasn't aware of the job requirements. I want to become a MA but it is required for me to be a US Citizen (i'm a legal US resident).

My mom and sister became US Citizens a couple months ago, but since I already turned 18, she couldnt carry me along with her. Another problem is that I want to join, go to bootcamp, in late August/September and I think the process of becoming a US Citizen will take months and months to be over with.

I need suggestions, advices, etc. I want to become an MA since I plan on becoming a police officer after being in the military.

thanks in advance

Supply Department, Engineering Department and Deck Department have the jobs that do not require a security clearance. If you want to get jobs in Combat Systems, Operations, Navigation and Communications Departments you'll need to become a citizen.

anythingthe doesn't require a Clearance is open to you.

don't forget that once you are in, the waiting time is waived and you can apply for citizenship within a year of enlisting. once that happens, and you have been in your current rating at least 2 years, you can apply to cross rate .

BTW.. MAs do very little 'police work' at all. being an MA will not help you become a polcie officer. but being in the military will.

It depends on several things. First is if you go through your G2/Intel people so they are aware of it first. If there is a problem with the country she is from, they will tell you upfront. Second, follow the correct procedures and most likely it will be find. Command approvals and so on. Third, it was very useful at my security clearance review to take my wife's immigration packet to the interview. It saved them a lot of times and questions. England, New Zealand or Australia are generally not a problem, as is Japan and Germany. Iranian is another story. Bottom line is talk to your security managers up front.

Join as a cook, bosnmate, ships serviceman etc. Get your citizenship then "strike" (crossrate)for MA. It may take some time to strike but stick with it if that is what you really want. Stay focused in your job, stay out of troube and keep your evaluations/performance high and you should have no problems.

I salute you for wanted to serve the country you have adopted unlike so many that just want to take. I think all people who serve in the military should be given citizenship.
