Seperate yourself totally unto Christ, and devote your love and all you are to Him above everyone and everything.
Get into the Bible until the Bible gets into you so that you can fulfill the command to "Be always ready to give an answer to every man of the hope that lies within you."
Spend all the time in prayer you can, speaking to and listening to God. Become proficient in warefare prayer that will not let go of God until the answer comes. You will incur the wrath of Hell if you pray in this way, but you will know in your heart that "greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world."
Put on the whole armor of God, and do not let anyone or any thing divert you from the path you have chosen. You must be "narrow minded to walk the narrow path."
Walk in the world but do not be of it - in other words make it your purpose to honor and glorify God in your thoughts, words
and deeds so that you may walk blameless so when men speak ill of you they will be lying.
Become so absorbed in loving God that the time will come when you will have the "mind of Christ" and grieve deeply in your heart for the weak condition of Christians in a world that desperately needs to see the power of God flowing through them. This closeness to God will also bring tears of sorrow and compassion for those who are lost and without hope in this world. It will cause you to forsake creature comforts to spend time interceding with tears for those you meet in your sphere of influence who are without Christ.
Love your enemies, do good to them who hate you, pray for those who despitefully use you. God will give you far more than these things, but it is a start.

Read Ephesians 6:13-20, is speaks of putting on the whole armor of God. Study this and you will see how all the components of this armor work together.
your loins girt with the truth (belt)
breastplate of righteousness
feet shod with with the preparation of the gospel (sure footedness)
shield of faith
helmet of salvation
sword of the Spirit
prayer
One has to have these to be strong in the faith and to withstand the temptations of this world

First of all, pray. Develop the Fruit of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, etc.) Read the Word and get it in your heart, not just your head. See God at work in everything. Rejoice always. Pray constantly. In all things give thanks. Do what you see the Father doing. Use the gifts and talents God has given you to advance His Kingdom. Love the unlovely.
Most of all, realize you are a work in progress.

Ahhhh.
Yes, the Holy Spirit is key here. As Christians, we are soldiers in God's Army on earth, fighting for good and for justice. But as for developing into one of these Warriors? I do believe it has to do with asking for His help and guidance, and becoming His instrument. Opening one's mind heart and soul to God and the forces of Good gives Me the power to fight wrongs.

The Word is the Sword. (God's and yours) Read the whole Bible. Looking at a verse here and there will not give you the perspective to really understand the faith. Then study other religions and philosophies.

My favorite is where pope Clement says in a letter that whomever you talk to the church must be right even if the person you are talking to is right, you have to tell them they are wrong because the church can never be wrong.

my thoughts on this:
to develop yourself as a spiritual warrior, you must maintain a relationship with Jesus Christ, read your Bible, attend church, get involved, etc. basically, just keep up your personal relationship with Jesus, you will succeed!
