I've just been reading a christian website about rock music. How it makes people kill themselves and other people, and how it hypnotises us.

Do you believe in this at all? I listen to rock, and I have never had the urge to kill someone or myself by listening to it.

I just enjoy what skilled and musical hands can produce with a Gibson Les Paul. If it hypnotizes me, so be it.

Classical music, in its day was considered by many Christians to be borderline satanic, and the most famous producers of classical music, Bach and Beethoven were labeled as crude, crass, womanizing, gaudily-dressed rebels. Sounds familiar, 250 years later.

I can certainly agree that most rock music is not the most edifying thing we can listen to, but I agree with you that I have never been compelled to kill someone after listening to it, nor have I ever been hypnotized by it. I do think that the more suggestive lyrics aren't really good for Christians because one might be tempted to act on the feelings produced by those lyrics. I think each person has to decide for himself/herself what to listen to. One's own walk with God will most likely eventually open their eyes to what is most inappropriate for them. I still listen to a lot of the 80's rock I grew up with, but there are songs and artists now that I won't listen to because I don't feel right about hearing what they're saying.

I am 36 years old and I have been a Christian since I was 13 years old and until 3 years ago I was a big supporter of Rock n Roll music. No I never wanted to committ suicide or kill someone. You know I just became more committed to serving Jesus Christ and studying the Word and I became more invovled with my church. I began to realize that Rock n Roll music does not promote good things. It instead promotes alcohol use, sex, and basically irresponsibility. Is that what God wants us to listen to? Sure not all rock n roll music promotes these things so what now? I have came to the overall conclusion that if the music doesn't praise or glorify God or promote positive christian lifestyles I don't listen to it. There are even some music with the Christian lable I will not listen too.

If there is anything bad in Rock music it will not give visible effects in everyone listening to rock, just like everyone that smokes doesn't get lung cancer. You have to take a large group of people to find out that, but it is a known fact that the risk of getting lung cancer is far greater among smokers than among non-smokers. So, if you want to find out if rock music is bad for Christians you have to take a large group that listen to rock and compare with a large group of Christians that don't. If you compare their interest in deep Bible stydy and prayer etc. you can decide if their is any difference. I know several Christians that have felt that they have felt a freedom they never felt before since they left rock music. They said it was addictive somehow and now they are free. But to prove this to be so you have to take a large group of people and compare. Just think of it, when you start smoking it doesn't feel nice at all. But when you have been used to it you will feel very well and nice when you smoke. you have an addiction. Today most people, through the influence of TV, have been used to rock music since they were babies. It will be impossible for them to tell wether it is good or bad. Wether it drives away the Holy Spirit from your heart or not. To me it seems rock music is addictive and that rings a bell for me. I think it is best to avoid it. Also when you listen to rock singers they use the voice in the way as when you express hatred, angriness and many other bad things. Judging from the natural voice and how it used in different situations I think the voice of rock musicians use voice mostly on the side that is not on the side of a loving Creator. Why don't you pray honestly, very honestly to God and ask him to enlighten your mind on this question? Take one week of music fasting and pray, really pray, and I am sure you will have the answer, if you are honest. Ask for the Holy Spirit to give you wisdom and understanding, to open your mind, your eyes and your ears. If you are really honest, you will have an answer.

hey now!! i'm a christian who loves rock and roll. why don't these people who criticize rock music take a look at the christian rock bands? rock has always been the excuse. why don't those same people attack country and western music for the depression and alcoholism it causes? rap music promotes murder, drug dealing/usage, prostitution, you now, all the things that are out there today. i'd be willing to bet there are alot of hypocrits reading these answers/websites. think about it.

If the people who maintain that website ever see my cd collection, I'll be burned at the stake for sure. I'm a theist, and I will listen to classic rock and even some heavy metal (GWAR) until I die. As I'm writing this, I'm listening to "Ten years gone" by Led Zeppelin, burning incense, drinking coffee, and smoking a cigarette. Am I in trouble?

That is totally stupid! If someone wants to commit suicide, there are other factors at work (depression, for instance). I used to listen to the heaviest metal there was, and the only urge I ever had while listening was to knock something over! It all comes down to the question of mental balance and personal well-being. Besides, if a person's faith is strong enough, there is nothing they can't withstand (remember the parable of the mustard seed).

Christ died to save us all from dogmatic judgments but in the end he failed - his dying words "Father why have you forsaken Me" are not to be mistaken. He said those words because He was able to see the dogma the would arise from his teachings - that broke his heart. rock music is expression and all expression must be understood in context. in this context it is entertainment if you enjoy it - as i do along with classical and every form of well performed music - enjoy it. as Christ said "Judge not by what goes into ones mouth, but by what comes out of it". there is no worse plague than the judgmental religious type of any stripe. there are five rules to make the Lord serve you as you serve the Lord: 1 do not lie 2 do not cheat 3 do not steal 4 do your best to keep your word 5 be good to your fellow human. the addendum to those precepts is when you fail - and you will - make amends. the five truths are: 1 the Divine exists 2 what is is 3 learn to live 4 live to learn 5 adapt or die. the addendum to those is truth 5 means throw out every aforementioned truth and rule if it is a matter of life or death. so after all that - no it is untrue. as a personal example my lovely wife enjoys Mediterranean music which i don't mind but after a while it makes me think i am walking on pins and needles because it is so tinny to my ear. love is the answer

Oh puuur-lease. I am a devout atheist by the way.
I listen Rock music (mainly heavy metal and alternative) and it is a HUUUUUUGE factor why I HAVN"T killed myself or anyone else. Same goes for a friend of mine.
It is very angry sometimes but it calms me down. It makes me happy.
And if it hypmotizes me... then I'm happy for it to do so.
It can be funny as well. Several songs my friend and I have given my friend and me alot of laughter.

Rock is the best thing that has hapened to me since Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. (Small explanation for that: I didnt have many friends as I was...a freak... so at school and at home I had to find entertainment elswhere.) I only got friends about 2 years ago... in grd 7...

And, incedintaly, a "friend" said that I was both possesed and evil as I read Harry Potter. Go figure.

Rock has changed my life, given me a lifeline and something that I'm actually good at. I intend to join a band (heavy/ alternative metal) and scream my lungs out and rock my guitar to hell and back. (scuse me)
I am good at music and it is something that has given me endless enjoyment.

And it's not only social rejects with insanity problems (like me) who listen to it... a friend of mine who is both smart and very nice listens to it. She is not as "hardcore" as my friend and I am but we (my freind and I) are not the worst metalheads you'll find either.

It is not the only genre of music worth listening to but if you do like it then why not listen to it?
Music is really big thingt for me... i love it.

ROCK ON!
