I have an indoor/outdoor speaker system. When it is outside, I'd like to use the batteries, and inside, I'd like to use the adapter. Do I need to remove the batteries when inside so as not to deplete them, or would plugging in the ac adapter cause the power to come from ac adapter instead of the batteries?

No, you should not need to remove batteries. All plug in adapters should cut the batteries out of the operation - that is their reason for being there. Some systems are setup so that the adapter charges the batteries if they are rechargeable.
