Homosexuality was decriminalised gradually in Australia. South Australia was the first in the late 1970s followed by NSW in 1984. Tasmania was the last State to decriminalise it. The age of consent is the same for gay people as it is for heterosexual relations. It is mostly 16 but Tasmania and perhaps another have 17 as the age of consent.

There are gay scenes in all the bigger cities with very large numbers of gays in Sydney and Melbourne. I live in country NSW and am openly gay and no-one cares. There are many other gay people in the area who have few if any problems.

Vilification of homosexual people is illegal but there are still some areas where discrimination occurs. Superannuation, visiting rights in hospitals, inheritance from partners etc are all grey areas. Make sure you both have valid wills detailing your wishes and make sure your families know about them.

Gay marriage is not yet legal but it probably will be in the not too distant future. Little Lying Johnny, our homophobic Prime Minister, will be chucked out at the next election and the Labor Party will be more likely to recognise gay unions. They will probably allow the States to do it first and recognise legal unions from overseas.

Adoption by gay couples is already legal in some States but you would need to be Australian citizens first. If you already have children there will be no problem.

I am sure you will be accepted here in Oz. My cousin is gay and lives with his partner and has never had any problems. They are great!! And as for family, the first gay adoption in Australia occurred last week in Western Australia and although it has caused some mixed feelings to many people, I think it is a step forward and that it should have been allowed years ago! Marriage between gay couples is not legal however...but it doesn't stop you having a commitment ceremony of some sort at all. I think you will love Australia. Best of luck.

You'll be fine! my sister lives with a gay guy everyone we know loves him because of his nice personality. Sure there are the people who don't accept, but thats the same all over the globe. There are many people who will except sydney and melbourne and brisbane (and im sure other places) have a big gay population and gay bars and stuff. You'll have fun :)
