I am trying to reinstall an XP operating system in an old computer, but the cd will not boot up at all. A message states that the hardware set-up is being configured, but the screen then goes blank and nothing further happens. I don't have any recovery discs, and the original os came pre-installed. The cd which I am trying to load is a genuine XP operating system, but I would be grateful for any advice. Many thanks, Graeme Murray.

It sounds like the "boot sequence" may be set wrong. Go into the BIOS and set the boot sequence so that the cd drive comes up first. That should do it. XP is a bootable CD and should start your computer.

After you have your system up and running, go to the motherboard manufacturers web site and download the drivers for your particular board and install them. You may also need the drives for any ad-ons that you have.

Good luck and I hope this helps.

I experienced that once in the past. I don't know if it's the same problem, but here's what worked for me: when you turn on your PC hit Del to enter BIOS(or what key is proper for you). There check the temperature levels and turn off emergency stop if the temperature is too high. Then boot up the CD and it should work. You can turn the option to the original value after u have installed windows. You may also try to install Linux instead of windows. The computer will work much faster with Linux. Try: http://ubuntu.org
