You always clip the dog first, then wash it. If it's a coated breed, and has any knots or matts on it, water will make them impossible to comb out.

Think of it this way...
When you clip a dog's hair tiny pieces of hair remain that can act like splinters to a dog. I highly recommend you clip the dogs hair and then bathe to wash any remaning hair to avoid the splintering effect. Also let your dog run out side to air dry or use a hair dryer to avoid pushing any remaining hairs that were not washed off. Once the hair is dry it should fall off. The reason a groomer bathes the dog and then clips is several reasons, but I will only list one. They are professionals and know how to get the small hairs off the dog's body to prevent "splinters" in the dog's skin.
Hope this helps!

I would do it like you do a human, before and after.....For the simple fact that when the hair is wet its easier to see what your cutting and to comb it as well. Then afterwards, you want to wash off any excess hair that's still lingering on the dog. Otherwise you wont see how much hair you really cut off. We used to just cut our dogs hair in the back yard, or Dad would do her hair in the bathtub sometimes, so she wouldn't run away as easily. My Dad always washed her during the whole process. Well I hope I was of some help to you, hun!! Good Luck, you might want to get an assistant to help you to hold the dog for you. Alot of dogs dont like all that water in their faces, and so on.. Have Fun!! Smile!!!

I would wash-clip-wash. Because when you clean them first you get all of the nasty stuff off and its easier to clip them. Then if you wash them after you get all of the extra hair off of them. I think its good to wash before and after. Like when yoiu go to get your hair cut and the person wets your hair first. Then you go home and take a shower to get all the hair off. Good Luck!

I think it might depend on the dogs coat.
My dogs are shih tzu's and are brushed out first to get mats out, water makes mats worse.
Then they are bathed, blow dried then cut. Then brushed out again.
