How can anyone not believe in God? That should be your question.

You also believe in a god even if you don't know it.

Today, many people call themselves atheists and it is frequently argued that atheism is the only rational viewpoint. However, it is also often said that there is no such thing as a real atheist. This is supported by the Bible which declares:
“a fool says in his heart that there is no God.”
So which view is correct?
If we give just a little thought to this matter, we can see that there is no argument at all as to whether the qualities and properties usually attributable to God actually exist. This is certain and beyond dispute. So really the only disagreement is over the source or origin of these attributes.
Furthermore, we can see that there are only 2 possible alternative sources of these attributes. It is self evident that something material can never come out of (absolute) nothing of its own accord (First Law of Thermodynamics). We know that something material exists (i.e. the universe), therefore something must have always existed, something must be eternal and have had no beginning. This eternal something, can only be: 1. A force or power independent of the material, and thus the Creator of the material, OR 2. The material itself.
So an eternal nature must be possessed by, EITHER:
1. A Supernatural Power.
OR
2. Matter/energy.
Consequently, all the other qualities, powers and potentialities which exist in the universe must have originally derived from ONE OR OTHER of these two proposed 'eternal' sources.

Some of the qualities existing in the material world.
Laws of Nature, Information & means of information storage (DNA etc.), Life, Design, Order, Motion, Love, Choice, Good, Beauty, Emotion, Intelligence, Kindness, Personality, Morality, Awareness, Justice, Wisdom, Hope, Joy, skill, etc.

There is no disagreement that these qualities are present in the universe. The only dispute is over the source or origin of these qualities.
SO
Is the stuff of the universe (matter/energy) eternal? Does this 'eternal matter' intrinsically possess all the above qualities, or the inherent potential to produce them of its own volition?
OR
Is there a power greater than, pre-existing and independent of, the material? A Supernatural Creator of the material, possessor and originator of all the above attributes evident in the material creation?
IT CAN ONLY BE ONE OR THE OTHER
SO THIS IS THE ONLY DISAGREEMENT, AND IT IS AN AGE-OLD DISAGREEMENT.
No atheist would attempt to claim that mankind is the originator of all these qualities. We are not eternal, we did not create ourselves or the universe, something greater than us essentially exists'. Is that something a Supernatural Creator God? Or a purely material power which must intrinsically possess all the qualities, powers & potentialities usually attributed to a Supernatural Creator God?- - A material god? - - A pagan god!
SO THE CHOICE IS CLEAR,- - WE MUST FACE THE FACTS!- - ATHEISM (or even agnosticism) IS NOT AN OPTION. YOU MUST PAY HOMAGE TO A POWER WHICH IS GREATER THAN YOURSELF, either; The Creator God of the Bible, or; the material pagan god or gods' (represented by: Mother Earth, Nature, the Sun, Moon, or idols of stone, wood etc.) which you must necessarily imbue with the SAME ATTRIBUTES.

SO NOW CHOOSE YOUR GOD?

I would have agreed with you a couple years ago, now my view is: Just as your body is comprised of organs which work together, we each are a part of a larger organism, within a larger organism. When you step back far enough to encompas every bit of energy and every bit of awareness, this is the body of God. The reasons we cannot remember what came before our birth is something important which protects us, it gives us a clean slate to build in innocence. It's really hard to accept the notion of an ever present creator because it means accepting self-responcibility. It means you're responcible for your own soul, and that everything matters... Self discovery and mastering your lower impulses is the greatest labor. The path of least resistance is simple, and leads to spiritual ruin.

When one believes in a higher awareness, it becomes more interesting to invest in onself, and improving oneself becomes a wonderful goal.

Really, our bodies are made up of simple matter. Why do we thing our awareness is any different? Awareness is not something human beings have the monopoly on. There is a bigger awareness out there and it wants to help you.

I also scoffed at religion for a long time, but now I get it, and now it's no wonder that there is a church in every town, sometimes there are churches on every block of every town. There's something in it, do you really think you're smarter then all the religious people in the world? Maybe there's a sensitivity to a spiritual food which these people have noticed, and that you have not.

Don't try to become a believer in God, try to become a doubter of your own doubt. Be open to evolving.

Exactly the point Jesus was making to the Jewish Ruler in John 3. If you can't understand simple things like the wind blowing, how can you understand complex things like the kingdom of God?

Incidentally, we STILL do not understand why the wind blows. Oh sure, you can explain all about density difference due to expansion due to absorption of thermal energy, and so on. But somewhere in that explanation, you will have to state that the less dense fluid rises. So I ask why does it do that? Another example: Is light a wave or a quantum? I have heard students attempt with,'It's a quantum that travels as a wave" !!! Tell THAT to Stephen Hawking (or Albert Einstein or Young or Huygens)

Additionally, the Bible makes it clear that you cannot find out God be searching, i.e. by using the scientific method !!

If you are credible and you gave your life to save me AND you have a big enough house to accommodate a life t-Rex, I might believe that you have a t-Rex in your house WITHOUT SEEING OR HEARING IT.

I can’t understand those who claim not to believe in God go on about every one else believing in God. It is a clear signs that you have issues with your own mortality, and -wish- you could feasible believe in a system that grants you ‘immortality’ (i.e. Not dying)

No, I’m not a believer, but I’m not an atheist either.
I’m non-religious, I accept all religions though favour none, and just as Greek mythology interests me, so do the traditions and customs surrounding religions that have lasted time.

If the system of religion, no matter how ridiculous the religion helps someone in their time of need then naturally it is beneficial to that person. Why should it concern you? Religion is s system of comfort, an external party, whether real or not, can mentally grant this person the strength required by believing that somebody out there believes in them.

“The opposite of the religious fanatic is not the fanatical atheist but the gentle cynic who cares not whether there is a god or not.:.” - Eric Hoffer

To call everyone "brain washed fools" is rude and I believe uncalled for. Did you post this so you would have a chance to bash? And why use IM, are you too conceited to invest your valuable time in others?
The only reason I even am taking my time is because I believe that this is a legitimate question despite how you presented it.
I was raised very religiously and have struggled with this question for years.
We desire a reason for our existence.
My problem is that the Bible is written by men who claim a GOD directed them in what they were to write. Greek, Roman, and other ancient mythology which predate the bible, show practically the same "stories" as the bible. Jesus/Sampson-Hercules, God/Jehovah-Zeus/Appolo, Satan-Hades, Heaven-Mount Olympus, Gabriel-Mercury. The list goes on.
Also many philosophers debate wether GOD demands obidience and decrees laws, or did man create laws and invent God to to enforce compliance.
I want to believe in a god with a purpose but it is difficult. Especially when people claim God watches over us and cares; not by what I see in the world today.
We each are entitled to an opinion, I myself doubt his existence but am not willing to completely give up hope.
That is called Faith, not foolishness. Is it better to have faith and Hope and be wrong, than have an empty void and find out that he does exist and wants nothing to do with you for your treatment of his believers?
I will continue to wonder at the discrepencies and other things I find wrong in the God stories; but I will not be rude and bash people for their own heartfelt beliefs.
Think about that approach to this debate.

I believe in God because I've seen and heard ghosts, I know this doesn't necessarily mean there definitely is a God but that's what it brings me to believe. Maybe if you and another atheist friend play with a Ouija board you might start to believe in the devil.

I'm not brain washed, I was an atheist for most of my life and I don't go to church or pray but to me the fools are the people who believe in nothing bigger than themselves. I'm not saying you have to go to church or practise a religion, what I'm saying is that people should keep an open mind when it comes to questions they can never find definitive answers to.

Dear jimmy,

People have been told that they can "believe" on Christ and become saved. And that seems so simple doesn't it? But it is absolutely false.... Mental assent of the existence of God (Jesus Christ) is not salvation. God has to do a supernatural work in the person because we are spiritually DEAD like a corpse (Ephesians 2:1-3). God has chosen to save (give eternal life) to some of the wicked rebels of the human race. When this miracle occurs, these "chosen are given a new resurrected soul in which they love God and want to obey Him (John 14:15; 1 John 2:3, 4). But the miracle of salvation (also called regeneration, born-again) is completely the work of God.

Please note John 6:29, "Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent."

Same type of question that Nicodemus asked Jesus when he wanted to know how to be "born again." The answer applies here as well... it is by faith. The faith is then validated with results. You can't see the wind, but you can experience the results of it. One last thing... if you told me that you had a T-Rex in your room, I might believe you if I knew you to be trustworthy and other sources had validated your sincerity. We've had thousands of years of reputable validation for the existence of God. Pretty hard to go against that much commonly held truth.

permit's placed this right into a Biblical analogy right here. The Pharisees of Jesus' time have been particularly knowledgeable and e book clever, yet did no longer understand the excuses at the back of the regulation. So whilst Jesus got here and tried to teach them a clean way of doing issues, they rejected Jesus and what he develop into attempting to do. The analogy right here is that GW Bush, an IVY league knowledgeable employer individual is quite like the Pharisees in many techniques. Oh, he might study the Bible and pray, yet i think of he gets so centred on GWB's needs that he's employing God's permissive won't his appropriate will. a minimum of i'm hoping this is the case, as a results of fact i won't be in a position to be sure God condoning the lack of ability of existence that has got here approximately as a results of his adamant stance on staying interior the conflict in Iraq. i'm optimistic that the supporters of the conflict will provide me a thumbs down for that one.
