Louis Pasteur confirmed that bacteria caused diseases.
Alexandra Fleming found the Penicillium mold, and found that it killed bacteria, but was unable to make the compound stable enough to be used in humans. About 10-12 years later Howard Florey and Ernst Chain experimented with the compound and used it on mice, before trying on humans, by injecting it into the patients.
Alexander Fleming was knighted in 1944. With Chain and Florey he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1945.
