Don't cut off parts of his genitals and DO NOT pull back his foreskin as someone else mentioned. This causes very permanent nerve damage in a child.[ http://www.cirp.org/library/treatment/phimosis/ ]

Get a competent doctor.
What he is suggesting is horrible.
There are much easier solutions than mutilation.
My advice is to find a doctor who is ethically not willing to perform circumcisions. You will find them even in the United States. I assume this is where you are from since the doctor even recommended it.

I'm just going to show you the consequences of male genital mutilation now.

It should be the choice of the victim as to whether or not they want to undergo the procedure. There are many men who try to undo the damage done to them every year: http://www.norm.org/
It is wrong to force an irreversible process onto them that they may not undergo as a adult if they still had the choice.

The foreskin keeps the glans soft and moist and protects it from trauma and injury. Without this protection, the glans becomes dry, calloused, and desensitized from exposure and chafing.
Specialized nerve endings in the foreskin enhance sexual pleasure.
The foreskin may have functions not yet recognized or understood.

"Circumcision removes the most sensitive parts of the penis and decreases the fine-touch pressure sensitivity of glans penis. The most sensitive regions in the uncircumcised penis are those parts ablated by circumcision. When compared to the most sensitive area of the circumcised penis, several locations on the uncircumcised penis that are missing from the circumcised penis were significantly more sensitive." Circumcision removes as much as 75% of sensation [ http://www.nocirc.org/touch-test/bju_6685.pdf ].

The foreskin reduces the force required by the penis to enter the vagina. It also increases the sexual enjoyment of the female partner. Here is a study to back this up: http://www.cirp.org/library/anatomy/ohara/

Performing circumcision on a child can and does result in the deaths of children due to blood loss and/or failure of the immune system.
http://video.yahoo.com/video/play?vid=512542
Approximately 230 American males die every year because of circumcision. [ http://www.sexuallymutilatedchild.org/deathsdo.htm ] This is a meaningless and very sad loss of life.

It can and does result in very significant scaring.
It can and does result in sexual problems later in life.

Circumcised males have a much higher rate of sexual dysfunction. [ http://www.cirp.org/library/sex_function/ ]

No medical institution in the developed world actually recommends the practice.
Let's have a look at medical associations in the developed world. The British Medical Association, Royal Australasian College of Physicians, Canadian Paediatric Society, American Medical Association, American Academy of Pediatrics, Australian College of Paediatrics and Australasian Association of Paediatric Surgeons. Every one of them recommends AGAINST performing the procedure. Their positions on the procedure can be found here: http://www.circumcision.org/position.htm

Ask your doctor what part of a girl he would cut of to treat her UTI's. In fact: What parts did he remove from the four girls that have had UTI's for each intact (uncircumcised) boy that has one?

A girl is four times more likely to have a UTI in the first six years of life than a natural (uncircumcised) boy is. Nobody removes 75% of their genital sensations to prevent a possible infection that can be treated with antibiotics.

Your doctor recomends "circumcision" as a sales ploy. He would rather pocket $400 for the surgery than those few bucks he gets for an office call.

To the gal that says she was tricked into not having her son "circumcised": The trick came when you were convinced that your son needed "circumcision". Antibiotics would have done it just as well for your boy as they would for your daughter.

Get a different (better) doctor.

When you have a toddler undergoing a circ, they will put them to sleep because they don't want even the remote chance that they will remember it.
I do believe that 2 UTI's are a bit quick to recommend a circ. Have you gotten a second opinion? I personally would be knocking down another Dr's door...
Push the cranberry juice, and make sure he is well hydrated. Make sure to give him a bath every night - just to clean that area out. Don't force back his foreskin - it will tear and hurt him (It doesn't start to retract on it's own until around 4 or so), so just make sure to let in soak in nice clean water (no bubble bath!).
Good luck to you! I hope it clears up quickly!!

I agree that two UTIs may be too soon to chop off a portion of his penis. I suggest you work at keeping it really clean for another year (the skin may not completely retract.. don't force it!) but if you still want to get the circumcision, be sure to get a sedative as well as the local anestesia.

They usually just do it while they are awake with little or no anestesia.

See it for yourself:

DO NOT pull the foreskin back and clean, it cleans itself naturally, im sure your doctor has told you this.

it will be painful and i feel bad for the little guy, but in the end his infections will hopefully stop and later in life his wife will be happier.

good luck to him!

Why didn't you have him circumcised when he was born? Religion?

Oh my, that is going to be real painful for him during the healing process.

All I ever heard is that males need to keep that area extremely clean in order not to get infections.

Yes on getting him circumcised.

Don't do it!!! It is totally unnecessary. Don't pull the foreskin back. I don't even touch my sons penis, it soaks in the bath. Don't use bath bubbles. He will be fine. I hate circumcisions!!

This is such an American thing to do. It is not routinely done in England. I would get a second opinion if I were you.
