for all of you fellow atheists, what would you think if we had our own church? to further expand OUR belief? christians, jews, and every other religion has their own church in which they basically learn more about their own religion, well, why not atheists? after all, we are the ones getting yelled on for not knowing our basic knowledge of our beliefs. in my opinion, i think it would be pretty cool. although it would stir controversy with society, especially the religious. what do you think?

Atheism isn't a belief system. It's certainly not a religion. The only thing all atheists have in common is the lack of belief in gods, that's all. I'm an individual, I'm not into "groupthink" or stirring up controversy. I'm happy just to be able to live without religion's toxic influence, and that includes church.

Organizing atheists has been compared with herding cats for a reason, but there are atheist organizations, conventions and so on, not to mention the upcoming getway in Fiji. Holler at me and I'll send you a decoder ring.

Yeah, I can't speak for all atheists/agnostics, but I thought a good percentage of us had problems with organized religion along with the whole belief in God stuff. If it were a group that just got together and debated various topics then it wouldn't be so bad, but I can just do that online like this. If the group resembled a church in that it set a strict belief structure with rules that stretched past the main idea of not believing then it would remind me a lot of organized religion and would turn me off quickly.

I don't think it would make any sense, atheism itself is'nt a belief system, it only means the lack of belief in any deity. Now there are branches of atheism that contain beliefs, but basically an atheist church would be a school of science.

I think I will stick to not worshipping anything all alone.
I discovered I was Atheist on my own and unlike organized religion I am not interested in recruiting others etc.
If I ever feel alone I have friends who believe as I do that I can talk to.

Gee, does everyone notice how little atheists know about their own belief system.

NO GOD

Not no CHURCH not NO BELIEF SYSTEM

If that were true, then Fundies who say Atheists have no morals are CORRECT

If you HAVE morals, you HAVE a belief system.

IT IS KINDA REQUIRED

But I did like the PUB answer!

Just what is the basis for atheism? What more is there to it than the fact that atheists don't believe there is a God. Right?
So , why do you need a "church" for that, unless you're a really slow learner!

To me, every library and every book of knowledge is my equivalent to a church.

We don't need a building, because our "church" is all the knowledge attained throughout the history of mankind.

However, to label such a wonderous thing a "church" would, I think, belittle the magnificence of humanities achievements.

You haven't really hung out with many atheists and tried to organize them....

We really don't have much in common other than we don't believe in any god. I have found atheists that believe in damn near anything else. So exactly what else would they talk about in this church?

See for me, not having a church is a big part of the point.

The fact that you use "dazed and confused" as your name says it all. Satan is the author of confusion. "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotton Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life"-John 3:16. God gives you a choice, either to believe in Him, or not. It's your choice, choose wisely. If you don't choose God, then so be it.

I get together with other atheists for discussion and social interaction through Meetup.com, but I would never belong to anything called "church".

Definition of church from Dictionary.com --
1. a building for public Christian worship.
