By and large I think the really evil tend to be one level down from the most infamous.

A good number of those listed so far were convinced that what they were doing was right. (in their eyes)

I submit that to be truly evil, a person must fully know that what they are doing is wrong (with no excuse or counterargument)and still do it.
However terrible, I don't think megalomaniacs who are convinced they are right fall into this category.

Evil is smaller and nastier than that.
It's maliciousness.
"I can do evil, hurt, here, and I want to."

I would have to name
Hitler
He was pure Evil, however I do admire how such a small man could control so many people to do anything he requested

I guess I could also add Saddam Hussein not such a little man, however I think he came as close to any of giving and order and having so many murder

I could throw out a long list of names known and unknown, but that would be meaningless since we haven't defined what we mean by "evil." I haven't even defined what *I* mean by the word.

Nevertheless, I will admit that I'm beginning to wonder what Russian President Vladimir Putin hopes to gain from being such a world-class jerk.

Hmmm...

Most of the names I have seen so far would be certifiably insane:
Hitler
Berkowitz
Dahmer
Bundy
Manson
Jack the Ripper
Prince Vlad.

Is a person really "evil" if s/he is criminally insane or are they just "sick"?

No serious suggestions for females yet, so let me nominate:
Hetty Greene (the witch of Wall Street.)

She was also probably certifiable.

Hitler. Vlad, emperor of Turkey around 2-300 BC, the original Dracule, Saddam Hussein, Idi Amin, Pol Pot and so on and so on. Any one who just killed his fellow man for the pure pleasure of doing so.

Just read later answers, well lucky Hitlers dogs, bad luck about the millions of Jews, starved to death, died of terrible illnesses, not to mention, shot, raped, murdered and gassed.

Infamous = Much bigger than famous, as in, you can be famous but not heard of in certain circles countries etc. Infamous, everyone knows who you are.

No one, everyone has some good, no matter how small.

I've heard before that Hitler was nice to his dogs.

To be truly evil you couldn't possibly be famous cuz you'd kill everyone around you.
