I am interested in a very clean 80's model Cadillac, around 60K miles, well serviced and pampered .... but with the HT 4100 4.1 engine. I have heard so many negatives about this engine. Should I avoid the 4.1 engine? There are other Cadillacs (and other makes) that I like from the 80's/early 90's that do not have the 4.1. What would you recommend? Avoid the 4.1? Thanks!

I was a Cadillac technician from 1984 to 1999.
The 4100 was a piece of junk! They leaked oil from everywhere, the intake gaskets would leak coolant into the oil, ate camshafts like candy, and where difficult to work on!
My advice!
Pick something else!

You might want to consider cutting your losses and finding another car. The 4100 wasn't a great engine to start with. It would not be cost effective to try and change to another kind of engine with all of the modifications that would be necessary. A rebulit 4100 would be the best shot, but would be expensive. A used 4100 would be a big gamble. I was a Cadillac tech for a long time.

Good when running bad when you need to change the gasket behind the water pump. There is this metal plate and two gaskets after you cut off the factory coolant pipe. You would be better served with another newer choice. Northstar engines have there oil leak problems and starter location under the intake manifold. Lincon 4.6 liter engines have plastic intake manifolds coolant leaks. Be very carefull get the car you want checked over before you lay money down.

That is the worse engine Cadillac ever made! The engine is interchange able with the 4500 and bolts right in. If the car is being offered for $500.00 buy it other wise walk away.
