A friend of mine has a medal in shape of Maltese cross, with a circular center. 2 swords, hilt up, make an "x" thru the circle. Left & right cross arms say "1871." Circle has "Ringen" engraved. Top cross arm says "Kr.V." Rear say "Heinr Ernst Piriete, Dreden A 16 inscribed. Any ideas? Thanks, A

Sorry no picture, but I' thinking it from Saxony and I like that "scheutzen" angle.

if you had a picture it would be great.

but it sounds like a medal from the Knights Templar (the fraternal order not the original ones).

probably a commemorative medal from a gathering or parade.

does it have a ribbon?

without a picture it is hard to say since it could be any number of medals.

It could even be a German Iron cross. is it black?

maybe even a little history on where your friend got it would be good as well.

ADD ON:

Does it look like the one in this ebay ad?

it is an Honour cross. it is similar to an iron cross but my understanding is it was given as an award for heroic deeds that resulted in death (it is presented to the next of kin).

"1871". (End of the Franco-Prussian War.)

"Ringen" (A location, Village, Town etc)

"Kr.V." = Krieger Verein / Military Veterans Association

Heinr(ich) Ernst Piriete, Dre(s)den A? 16?

Without a picture all I can think of is the above, with swords and a cross it is more than likely an association service medal for a member of a military veterans association, and not an actual military issue medal.

It is definately not an Iron Cross, Germany, i.e, Prussia and the German Kingdoms were some of the most prolific medal makers in Europe, it really does help if you can take a picture of both sides and post it at the following site:

It sounds to me like a rifle Sharpshooter qualifications badge. The engraving was an after the fact add on.

Kr.V. probably means "Kreis V" or district 5. I agree with one poster it is probably a shooting competition medal.
