Check out this site. It has great information. Although I do agree with the others that you should look into adoption, I also understand falling in love with a little puppy. I usually go with instinct. I have both adopted and purchased pugs.

The way you tell if it is healthy or not is by observing its interactions. If there are multiple puppies there will be a very energetic one or ones, ones that are being pushed around, and those that are sitting aside and not engaging with the other puppies at all. Depending on who you are you have to decide which is best for you. Do you want a puppy that will sit in your lap or run around and play catch? Also, when I was shopping for a pug a woman had one that was very sniffly. Pugs sniffle but it was blowing snot everywhere. She said that he had a little cold and was going to give us his medicine. We didn't buy him due to this. Be sure not to buy a sick pug regardless of how minor the breeder says the problem is. Some breeders offer health guarantees but they are usually only a few days. If you are buying a champion pug (1000s of dollars) you often get a year long health guarantee. Also, make sure that the puppy has been vet checked before you give them the money.
You can't always tell if it is purebred just because it looks like a pug. You can ask for papers and if they don't have any ask to see the parents. They sometimes even have DNA records if it is a larger breeder or a kennel. However, although one might occasionally slip through the cracks, if it looks like a pug it probably is a pug.

No way to tell if it is healthy or not. Are these puppies from a puppy mill??? Most breeders breed pugs over and over and then cast off the females that can no longer produce. Any puppy you buy in a pet store regardless of what kind it is will 60% of the time become sick after a few weeks. Pug puppies prone to many disorders like hip dysplasia, knee problems ets and the more a female is bred the chance of her pups having genetic disorders increases. If you are truly interested in getting a pug, why don't you go online and look for a pug rescue organization in your area?? There you will find pugs of various ages who all have been found as strays, turned in by their owners who were not prepared for the up keep a pug can require AND former puppy mill females that were cast of because they could no longer produce a
litter of pups. They are wonderful and loving animals. Most rescue organizations have treated their rescues for their medical problems and placed in loving foster homes. I have 3 rescue pugs. All are wonderful ,because they finally know what it is like to be loved and because of that they give back more love and companionship that you can imagine.

You can always tell when a pug is purebred. It has the squished face and curly tail.. and just looks like a pug. And always take ur puppy to the vet after you get it. To make sure its healthy and happy.
And when I picked out my puppy (not a pug) I picked the one who really friendly towards me. Just the one you fall in love with!

You won't really know if it is healthy just by looking at the puppy. When you go to see the pups, ask questions. Such as the health of the pups, the health of the parents, what medical care the pups have received, papers, etc. Spend time with the puppies and see which one you really click with. No matter what puppy you choose to bring home, you will want to make an appointment with your vet to get a health check for your pup.

In BUYING a pug, you have unknowingly impregnated the mother of that pup yet again because you are making that breeder richer. Adoption is the way to go. Petfinder.com is a great source of dogs in dire need of homes. If you insist on buying a pug, I suggest you see both parents, both parents registration & health records. Reputable breeders will give you a guarantee on their dogs, no guarantee, no sale. But really, you would be saving a ton of money by getting a rescue pug instead.

Well, if you're buying from a breeder, the breeder should tell you if they are pure bred. Don't pick a quiet, mellow puppy. This is usually a sign of a disease. Although if one puppy is sick, chances are, all the puppies are sick. Hold all the puppies on there back, and upside down. Take the one that gives the least struggle, and has the best personality.
Have you considered adopting from a shelter. There are so many homeless dogs in the world, and those puppies will find homes. If you do get one of those puppies, make sure you take it to the vet to get shots, and get the puppy neutered.

try going thru rescues. Google in "pug rescue" and "pom" rescue. Since you said you want to adopt, this is your best chance of finding what you're looking for. Getting a dog from a breeder is not considered "adopting" it is "buying" (and contributing to the pet overpopulation prob!) so i highly recommend going thru rescues! ---Oh ok! I'm glad you want to rescue one! Good for you! there are too many homeless pets out there!

You look for a responsible breeder..one who doesn't breed any dog under 2 years old, who does all genetic health tests pertinent to that breed and only breeds those dogs that pass, who either shows to points or champion or has their dogs evaluated to ensure they meet breed standard, who gives a health guarantee, who has a take back clause in the contract for anytime during the life of that pup if the buyer should be unable to care for for any reason, who sells ALL pet pups on spay/neuter agreements and limited registration, who only registers with legit registries (AKC,UKC,CKC (Canadian Registry) if here in US), who is available after the sale to help or offer advise if needed.

If you are truly this ignorant, take along somebody who actually KNOWS WTF they're DOING!!!!
PUREBRED animals from REPUTABLE breeders will have AKC REGISTRATION PAPERS!!!
Will have their vacc.s & worning dates written down.
Will NOT allow pet-stuff to go on FULL reg.=LIMITED reg.ONLY!
Will put YOU on CONTRACT as to YOUR responsibilites=spay/neuter,etc.
Will tell you which pup suits-NOT allow *you* to.
Wil NOT sell *you* ANY pup if you are so ignorant of proper care as to be calling a PUPPY a BABY!!!
