it all depends on what you watch,

if you like sport, action movies and games console go for plasma, as lcd has " lagging "

You you just watch normal tv, then lcd as it has a slight better defin.

plasma will give you better brightness, contrast ratio, and yes anything from 30,000-60,000 viewing hours ( thats the gas inside, so a bit of urban myth about short life span )

Panasonic did a survey recently and asked joe public the same thing, out came the results everyone went for lcd, then they where showed lcd next to plasma and asked what was better, and guess what PLASMA WAS 60%.

But it is all down to YOU.

You can't go wrong with either. let you eyes be the judge they both offer a outstanding picture & they have there pros & cons it comes down to which can you live with or without, also the rumors about plasma sets are not true either (heavy, short life span, burn in,too pricey) I picked a plasma over lcd sometime ago because i still see (even the best lcd 's) has that motion lag in fast moving scenes (action movies, sports) & that was the deal breaker for me it is much better now than ever but it's still a problem for me so i will wait until that responds time is 2ms or under. The real key is this look for the top brands, read reviews, check & compare prices for your budget & visit a store & compare side by side(bring your own material dvd's,hd-dvd or blu-ray) & that may give you an idea what's better.
( I work with home theater gear.)

definetly LCDs
-upto 175 degree viewing angle
-portable and lighter
-more durable than plasma
-easier to install
-look more brighter
-thinner
-LCDs are not affected to work at high altitudes but plasmas can be affected

Not a case of which is best. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. I've found the choice comes down to personal preference as they both give very good but somewhat different types of picture. Best bet is nip down your nearest Currys and compare.
