A purebred dog with registration papers.
A pedigree is like a family tree or bloodline but if you mean a pedigree puppy, it's purebred with papers. If you live in the US, it should be AKC, UK is KC papers, Canada is CKC and if you live in Australia, the dog will be registered with whatever state you live in (eg. Victoria - VCA - Victorian Canine Association).

A pedigree is the line of the puppy. Only dogs with State Approved bloodline papers are considered registable pedigrees.

Most registered pedigrees are pure-breeds.

For example: a pedigree Staffordshire terrier would only have other staffys in its family line. If it bred with another breed, however, its children wouldn't be purebred, but it will still have its pedigree.

If you buy a pedigree dog, that doesn't make it show quality. Pedigree means nothing, except for defining the look of the dog and its temperament. Everything else comes down to hwo it is raised and cared for. There are officially registerable and Show Recognised cross-breeds, such as Labradoodles. A puppy from a pet store is not a pedigree, even if it is purebred

(unless you have the papers, but those are generally supplied by breeders themselves, who are VERY hesitant about supplying puppies to pet-stores, who unless Officially Qualified and approved, can be negligent to its animals.)

Hope that helps.

It is a purebred that is registered with one of the legit registries...AKC , UKC (United Kennel Club), CKC (Canadian Kennel Club)...and can trace it's family tree back for many generations.

Mixes can NOT be officially registered or shown..Any registry that does register these is only a scam registry and any papers from them are worthless.

Pet Store puppies can be "pedigree" as long as they are registered with one of the legit registries and not a scam registry. Also a "pedigreed" puppy does not have to have any champions in it's line in order to be purebred..the only criteria is taht both parents must be of the same breed, be registered and the resulting litter must be registered.

A dog with a pedigree means that they can actually trace the dog's lineage back to some sort of champion by American Kennel Club standards. Which is their idea of 'perfection' in a dog. The dog will have 'papers' that gives you this genealogy with official stamps on it.
All it boils down to is the puppy is going to cost you a ton of money. So unless you are into showing your dog at dog shows nobody needs a pedigree for their puppy its really just snob status.
