Depends on what you think she would like. Some pearl jewely would be cute. A gift certificate for the bookstore if she reads, one for the craft store if she does crafts, one for bath and body if she likes those products.
Take her out for lunch and a movie, or shopping with a trip to the ice cream store.

I turn 55 this July, and like almost anyone else would enjoy something that reflects my interests or perhaps something I wouldn't buy for myself--something that is luxurious, but not necessarily expensive. Facials, for example, for most women fall into this category, but so would a bouquet of flowers. You could also treat your friend to lunch, or buy her a good book (or purchase a gift certicate towards a book). Unless you are really close to your friend and know how she would take any gag gifts, don't over emphasize her age.

I'll tell you what I would have liked for a 50th birthday offering: a gift certificate for Amazon online.

I can't complain, though; I got a stunning pearl ring which I won't even let my sisters try on.

But...books & stuff at Amazon would be great!

A good quality champagne or a gift voucher for some sort of pampering like a massage or facial etc. Maybe a gift voucher to a book store.

You could give her 50 of something. However, she might appreciate a pampering basket (fill it with bath gels, lotions, chocolate, etc). Or perhaps a special evening out at her favorite restaurant.

Gift card to her favorite store

Pampering basket - bath oils, moisturizers, etc

a night out on the town with her best friend - you!

Unfortunately, you haven't listed her likes and dislikes or what she's interested in, so I listed things I would have liked on my 50th!

It would help if we knew something about her. Her age doesn't tell us anything about her likes or dislikes.
Does she like jewelry, clothes?
It's kind of generic but maybe you could treat her to dinner and give her a gift card at her favorite store.

Interesting. I'm 53, but all I saw in your question was "50 yr" and "old lady." Man, whatever happened to youth?
