Yesterday I posed the question of which dog food brand is best and most everyone agreed that it is Canidae. I'm going to switch to this brand of dry food ASAP!! Should I feed my 5 year old male shih tzu....
1. All Life Stages (chicken, beef, turkey & fish meal)
2. Lamb & Rice
3. Chicken & Rice

I will use 1/3 cup of one of these dry foods and add some cooked ground sirloin and beef liver for added protein. I feed twice per day.

THANKS!

Unless your dog has an allergy I would recommend not feeding lamb. Lamb can cause copper toxicity over time and really is only designed for dogs with allergies to other meat sources.

Either the Chicken or all life stages would be best.

it is also fine to add ground beef, liver, heart, gizzards, chicken, turkey, egg, cottage cheese, yogurt to your dogs kibble it adds a bit of variety and most dogs enjoy it.

Don't worry about excess protein with real meats, eggs, cheese etc..these are natural proteins and will not cause an overload. They are very easily processed by dogs. The protein levels that you need to watch are in kibbles.

My personal opinion is that you don't need to add the beef. Beef is harder for dogs to digest. With Canidae you really don't need to add anything. If you must I would go with soup bones boiled and add the broth only for better taste as a treat. Chicken is great but don't forget the human chicken has been affected by the melamine and lamb is hard to come by. As far as which to feed your pet if I were you I would ask Canidae on what they recommend for your particular dogs, they are should know. Look for a phone number, Google it I am sure you will get much needed info.
Good Choice.

Iams is crappy food. I was feeding that to my American Bulldog he got skinny, coat looked terrible, I just couldn't get him to gain weight. I changed his dog food to Royal Canin and what a difference, he started gaining weight, his coat looked great. Just choose a dogfood that has meat as the first two ingredients. Sure other dog food is easier to find in grocery stores but they are just loaded with fillers.. Don't get dog food that has the first ingredient as corn.

Any meat source is fine as long as your dog isn't allergic to it.

You don't need to add protein to a nutritionally-balanced kibble. More is not necessarily better. Too much protein is hard on the kidneys.

You should feed you're dog some chicken and the dog food and the type of dog food I think should best for you're dog is Beneful because you're 5 yr. old male dog will get a great deal of both protein and nutrients you're dog needs to get in his diet.
