Because, no one wants to cart their 16 y/o whiny brats around anymore. Nor do they want to be around them at home. "Here's my keys...go to the mall and bother other people."

I think this is a question that falls on the parents cause the only way 16yr olds can get there license is if the parents sign the approval.
Where im from they have for 16 year olds called a Provisional License were the 16yr old can only drive by him/herself or family member for 6 months, then is able to get his/her actual license if the parents approve. If they don't then the kid will be stuck with the provisional till he/her is 18.
If he/her gets pulled over for a ticket or been in an accident that is his/her fault at the age below 18 then they will take his/her license (Provisional) away and will have to wait to drive when there 18yrs old.

Why not?
The younger we can start drivers on roads away from heavy traffic and high speeds, the faster they can learn the reflexes to be good drivers. People learn faster when they are young.
As the starting age of drivers goes up and up, we can expect the accident rates of starting drivers to go up and up, because it will take them longer to learn how to be good drivers.
Currently, kids ride with their parents, watch TV, see all kinds of bad habits for years and years. Then after they have all these false notions about proper driving, they are expected to take a very short driver's ed class to correct those years of bad influence.

so parents dont have to haul our asses all over the place. i mean think about it, if we(16-17 yr. olds) couldnt drive, gas prices would go up, store prices would go up because buying would go down because teenagers would effectively leave the market. its all economics, the reasons some states dont let 16 yr. olds drive is because theyre being run by uptight right wing assholes

I don't know, but I wish they wouldn't. Maybe just let them drive with a parent or other responsible driver (not that all parents are even responsible to begin with) with a permit until 18 or so.
