With what program I can open files with .dat extension?

That extension is too generic to have a specific program to be associated with it. If you knew what sort of data may be contained within we may have better ideas.

well, it depends on the file. If it's an index.dat file, DON'T OPEN IT! It's a data miner! (steals personal info) some .dat applications are part of security programs, but you shouldn't need to open the file in the first place. They are more functions than something to read. Some are data files that aren't necessarily opened with a program, but with a database handler. For example, a mail merge using data from excel would store the configuration of the data as a .dat file, but not necessarily show the data itself.

DAT files (.dat)
DAT files are data files, usually comma delimited, that contain data in ASCII format. These files are able to be open in a variety of programs including Microsoft Word and Microsoft Notepad.

These files are data files created with some program and opened by that program.

You could probably use a hex editor, but that information probably wouldn't be of any use for you.

Try www.fileext.com. You can put in any file extension and they will tell you what programs can open them. Are you sure it is not digital audio tape?
