I think weight-lifting is most efficient for toning. and to burn fat (so the muscles show), increase your cardiovascular by running, jumproping, or biking or other aerobic/anaerobic exercises. don't start out too extreme. work your way up. and even if results don't show up right away, don't be discouraged.
as for eating, say goodbye to the junkfoods. no more sodas (the diet sodas are also bad), chips, sweets, cookies, etc. if you get cravings, drink some water to fill your stomach up (sometimes your body mistakens thirst for hunger!) and wait it out (most cravings pass in about 15 minutes). eating about 4 or 5 small/medium size meals a day is actually healthier than 3 big ones. if there are certain kinds of foods you like (e.g. peanut butter or bread), go for the natural kind; it's healthier. don't put food in sight because this can trigger cravings. choose fresh fruits rather than fruit juices. make sure you get enough protein and not too much carbohydrates. there is a difference between good fats and bad fats. avoid bad fats (trans fat and saturated fats) and go for monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats.
don't fast (abstain from food) because this causes your metabolism to slow down. don't abstain from food in the morning and afternoon so you can eat more at night; this will not help you to lose weight.
and fyi, not assuming you drink, but alcohol is empty calories, so no alcohol
sorry if that's too much to remember
go, willpower!

find daily calorie intake calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours - it optimizes your metabolism)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have protein (lean meat, legumes etc) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise is the only fat burning exercise (running, jogging, swimming, cycling, elliptical etc) 4-6 times a week for 30-50min (ideally 45min because the first 20-30min body burns carbs and only then starts burning fat), light weight training (more muscle=faster metabolism)
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, pasta etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)

Diets are tricky because once they get boring people tend to eat whatever they want. So, whats worked for me is to watch what I eat...eat alot of salads, tuna, salmon, chicken w/o skin and drink alot of water. Jog a distance that you feel comfortable and when you feel your not able to continue stop, take a breather of approximately five minutes then start short bust sprints to build up speed. Do this for about a mile or two. Good Luck !

cardio 3-4 times a week depending on how busy you are (e.g. running, cycling, anything that keeps your pulse racing) set goals after a workout, that will help your speed and stamina. weight training...??? you should have balanced diet (cut down on the junk food! and eat a variety of veggies, fruits, protein- meat, fish, and carbs for energy) and drink lots and lots of water (about 8 cups a day)

try to run about every other day. on the days you run eat carbs because they burn off real fast. you can take chromium to curb the cravings for certain foods, and take flax seed oil capsules to put the good fat into your body so it will release the bad fat. try to cut out the sweets and lieft weights to tone. cardio is great for you and burns fat, weights tone, and running increases stamina and does just about everything for you. crunches are good too. just don't overwork yourself and not give your body time to rest because then you accomplish nothing. good luck!
