Your problem sounds like valve pressure problems.

Excess kick down valve pressure will cause your vehicle to hang on changing gears as well as changing up with little effort.

I don't think you have a major problem but a minor adjustment.

Good Luck

1998 Nissan Pathfinder Problems

I just checked for Nissan information about incorrect shift timing and you describe a transmission failure that will get worse soon. Removing the trans oil pan will tell all! Thrust washers fail and leave a gold mine of brass in the bottom of the pan either in front or the rear of the pan metal is bad. Don't forget to replace there radiator too because that metal is in the oil cooler. If you don't the new transmission will only last a week. Some owners option is replace the transmission cooler with a B&M 2300 in front of the radatior. I know bad news... Good Luck

This is common in Pathfinders. If you search Google you ll find several people who put many thousands of miles with the 1st to 2nd shift issue called slamming gears by Nissan. It s true other things can cause this, but it s nothing to worry about in these vehicles. Some reported this under 50k miles and ended up putting over 300k on these tanks. They are extremely reliable vehicles and the engine is referred to as bullet proof and that with proper maintenance it can last many hundred thousands of miles. Mine has had this problem for over 100k miles and just went over 220k miles and still running strong. I even tow a 24 camper trailer with it.
