Sunburn REALLY dries out your skin (& the salt- or chlorine, makes it WORSE!). Next time you take a shower- put some kind of moisturizing lotion on your chest when you get out. You may have to do that for a few days- until that sunburn begins to peel...

Sunburn does also itch because the skin is burned and dried out. The more it heals the more it will itch. If you got a rash from the oil it could be the problem. Try something different, something moisturizing and see if that helps. Aloe lotion is great!

Peter....have you ever seen something cooking on the stove and the oil it is being cooked in? Well, the same principle applies. You are sort of cooking yourself.
In my opinion and I am not selling the stuff or anything, you should consider a cream based sunscreen. You don't mention your natural skin pigmentation and that should be at least one of your factors. Dark-skinned people, though they will sunburn too, have a built-in sun-screen but also need to keep the infared rays from toasting them. There are many good sun-blocks and they do not keep all the bad stuff from cooking your skin tissue. Ask your local pharmacist or health-care provider for the right # sunblock for your particular skin.
Water is just a great reflector for getting those pesky rays to do it again and again. It also washes off whatever you are using to protect your skin.
Peter--don't be "kid-minded" and just stay out there for as long as you can. You ARE cooking yourself and you and I both know that just the right amount of time is better than the overdone burger! It is better to get smaller amounts of exposure over a longer period of time than a massive cookout dose in a day or two.
Be well, buddy.

Mike

Your chest itches because it's burned. Sunburn causes dry, irritated skin (because it's burned)--which often leads to itching. Water (especially in the shower) just irritates the burn even more.

You will probably find it has more to do with the fact that your skin has dried out, despite using oil. Itching usually means that the damaged top layer of skin is going to peel off. I would keep moisturising, It can't do any harm. Then remember to wear sunscreen, my daughter never goes out without it and she has a beautiful tan, no burning.

Cool water, not hot water. Use aloe lotion. Lotion may feel hot because it traps the heat in, but your skin is so damaged that it is needed. Your skin will always be more sensitive now, you need to be extra careful in the future. Been there many times, be sure to use lots of that spray on sunscreen next time!!

Your skin itches because it's irritated and dry. Try some aloe Vera or after sun lotion. You can also check out WEB MD.

Your sunburned skin itches because it has been damaged, and not likely by the suntan lotion or ointment. Read more about sunburn at:
