VERY comfortable shoes...and see how the weather is going to be, because it always seems to be a little warmer in the city than the surrounding areas.
The best thing about the city is that you sort of fit in no matter what you're wearing...if you plan on going to a really nice restaurant, of course you'd want to look into dress codes, but otherwise you'll be set in shorts and t-shirt with some sneaks.

Definitely just jeans, and a t shirt. Those are fine. Shorts are a bit risky, because when i think of shorts, i imagine people with heavily designed floral print shirts, and fanny packs.
But yeah, dressing isn't the biggest sign of you being a tourist, the biggest sign is the way you act. I wish i had examples , but its mostly just common sense stuff. Like, don't walk around clueless. Also, try not to stop in the middle of a crowd of moving people to take a picture of a landmark. Go off to the side.

Yes, comfortable shoes are a most. Jeans are just fine, but I'd avoid wearing shorts. Not only do they brand you as a tourist, but you do NOT want to sit down on the subway while wearing them.

You can really wear what you want. I've seen males and females wear shorts and tennis shoes. I prefer socks not being able to be seen but that's a personal preference

Just wear a NY Yankees cap if you want to blend in. Or a NY Mets cap will also do the trick.

COMFORTABLE SHOES!!!
You will be on your feet probably 12 or more hours during the day, walking or standing nonstop on tilted sidewalks, subway grates, potholed and cobblestone streets, depending on the part of town.

walk around with a boston red sox shirt and hat. they love that in new york!
