I let my female cat into my backyard because she was howling deeply by the door, because she's in heat and wanted to go outside. An hour later I look outside and theres my neighbors' huge Tomcat sitting next to her. I dont know how old he is, but my cat is a year old. I watched them for about 20 minutes and he would try to move near her everytime he did that she jumped away from him. She meowed at him a couple times, but she would just sit there and it seemed like she was teasing him. This is the second cat thats been trying to mate with her during her heat cycle. Not since before her first birthday [the second] she had never become in contact with another cat since july of last year and that was her siblings. WHY WONT SHE JUST LET THEM HAVE IT??

I HAVE MORE THAN ENOUGH PEOPLE WILLING TO BECOME KITTEN OWNERS FROM MY CAT. I am not an irresponisble pet owner and I would like to take this as a learning experience and so I can personally learn more about the birth process. These kittens WILL be taken care of and I DO have friends EAGER to be owners and whom I think are totally worthy and capable fo owning a kitten.

Paula G is right--cats have STDs just like us, including many that are KILLERS and HIGHLY CONTAGIOUS through body fluids. I had a cat that was really nice to my other cats, but when we tried to adopt a stray, he would chase it away. When I caught the stray and took it to the vet, it had one of these STDs, and had to be put down because it could spread through SALIVA if the stray bit or licked one of my healthy cats.

It sucked. I can't imagine having to put down a momma AND her babies b/c they got sick from a dirty Tom cat!!!

For the best option for her health, get her fixed. OR, if you have to be a grandmomma, at least find a known healthy mate. Your neighbor should have something from the last yearly visit to the vet saying that their Tom cat is safe, in fact, if you choose to let her mate with him.

But, please realize how many TENS of THOUSANDS of cats are put to sleep EVERY DAY because no one adopts them from shelters. It would really be so awesome if you could talk friends into getting shelter kittens. Maybe you could even adopt one, to scratch the "baby itch!" I've done this before, and it is SO rewarding--the little kitten KNOWS what you saved him from, and always shows it.

As far as her behavior toward the Tom:
She's new to the whole thing, and he is a stranger. Give her more time to get to know the Tom; it may take a week of supervised visits (don't want a stray to get into the mix!) for her to warm up. Cats like to court, sometimes cuddling, or play-fighting...each has its own style, and they have to figure out how to get along first. (By the way, your cat won't really like it, once it starts. The female cat has to be held down by the male cat because it hurts, and she'll try to get away. Sometimes, he'll bite or claw through the skin on her neck/throat while trying to hold her. I wouldn't let any of my girls go through this; I love them too much!)

I gave you a long answer, because you had a valid question, and good reasoning. I hope this helps you come to an informed decision.

That reminds me of when i lived with my friends and there cat treacle

Marvin, the male cat was constantly horny, and for at least a wk treacle would play 'hard to get' i think it was just flirting (which as time went on was really obvious)

Try not to worry. Mybe she has already let him have it.I know treacle n marv used to mate all in the house it was so funny we had laminate flooring they would start to mate by the window then end up sliding to the other side of the room.
After about 10 times(literally) she must have been sore and would not let him in anymore.

Maybe she is sick of men(well male cats)
plus if she is quite old its umnderstandable hun

so the male is just a stray right? And your neighbor just lets it run? And how many diseases is he carrying? How sick do you want your cat to get? This is a very BAD idea! If she was interested she would have let him right away.
If you want her to breed find someone with an inside healthy male!
And if your friends want kittens - the animal shelters are killing them right and left! This is kitten season and there are a ton of really cut kittens that need homes. You do not need to bring anymore kittens into this world - I cant say anymore - I belong to three cat groups - and it makes me very sad knowing that so many kittens and young cats are being killed!

I understand you have many willing new pet owners who will take your kittens, but please think about that from another angle. There are already thousands of kittens being born who don't have good homes and are being put to sleep every single day. If by allowing this cat to have kittens you are then keeping several potential new kitten owners from adopting ones already in danger of being put to death, that is in no way a responsible decision to make. Please, before you allow this to happen just for the fun of it, go check out a few local shelter websites and feline rescue websites and see just how many innocent kittens are being killed. Get your cat spayed, please.

Get your kitty spayed and then she won't jump away. She doesn't want to have kittens! I f you want kittens so bad... get them at an animal shelter! You know each animal shelter put down over 1000 kittens a year because they keep getting more and more unwanted kittens that they have no room for! JEEEEZ!

Why haven't you desexed her if she's nearly 2 y.o.? I feel sorry for any female cat because every TOM in district can scent her out. Thank Goodness I'm a female of the human kind.

She doesn't think that they are worthy males. Unlike us, cats don't mate for recreational purposes, they are in it to pass their genes on. Maybe there is something that she sees in those cats that she sees as unworthy.

Why isn't this cat spayed? There are enough homeless pets in this country already!

She doesn't like him. He's old and mangy, maybe. She wants a handsome young male for her husband. But it would be much better all round if she was spayed and didn't have to go through all that...
