i supervise my cat on his leash.he likes to hang in the bushes and since he doesnt know freedom he thinks the leash is just fine.if he is an outdoor cat moniter him outside until he gets street smart and suirt him with hose whenever he is near road.....however several years ago we lived on a very quiet street and our cat loved laying on the road. Our dog would always chase her off.(dog had previously been dinged by car and would herd even as kids off the road) anyways we took the dog for a walk and when we came home the cat had been squished by a car...no dog to chase her off.

Kittens learn from their mothers. If your kitten was with his mother, he would stay with her and learn to hunt and navigate his world from her viewpoint. Kittens should never be allowed outside by themselves until they are adult, or at least about 5 or 6 months old. Until then a kitten can be introduced to the outdoors with you along. You should be there to see that the kitten does not get lost, into trouble, or in fights with other animals. The real problem you are expressing here, is that you live near a busy street. You cannot teach a cat or dog to be wary of the road and its hazards. If you live on a busy street, the kitten or adult cat will inevitably find things to intrigue him that are simply not on your side of the street. A butterfly, another cat to chase, a mouse to hunt, a shadow. He will not take into account, the cars that are moving much more quickly than any small animal would approach him. His eyes are not made to watch for traffic. Cats do not fare well near a road, and if you keep your cat inside, he will be much safer. Get him a kitty climbing pole, or make one of your own. I just recently carried a just hit cat to a vet. It did not survive. It was not a pretty sight. I feel sad for its owners, and for the cat.

You have to keep him inside until he becomes more aware of cars etc... when you let him out, supervise him and keep a kitty litter inside.

Sorry but its the ONLY way.

My kitten was run over a few weeks ago... I had to tell me daughter she ran away to save her from the devastation. We live on a very quiet street too and it still happened.

Keep it inside, please.

You can also put a bell around its neck so when you put it out and cant see it you can hear it jingle.

I have a little pup and I have given her a bell, even though she is stuck in the yard (fenced) so I can be extra wary of where she is, I hear the bell, I know she is there!

Keep him inside! It's not safe outside for a baby, or any cat, especially if you live by a busy road!

Keep him in the house. He is just a baby and even if he wasn't a busy street and cats don't mix. If you love your cat keep him safe.

Keep in the house...it's a generally better life for cats. But if you do want to let him outside, then you can train him on a leash. My sister's cat goes on one. Buy a little halter and a leash and start with taking him outside for little bits of time. Gradually he will become leash trained and then you can walk him or tie him up outside for fresh air.

The only way to keep him from trying to cross the street is to keep him inside. Unless you plan on being outside with him everytime he tries to cross and are able to call him back

gotta keep it inside my family has had about a dozen cats and we've had one that would actually look both ways before crossing the road (and trust me we didnt teach that but he knew.) you cant train cats very well especially not for that.
