Many scary movies and books use religious imagery of evil, hell and Satan as the means by which to illicit the fear.. Without a belief in the imagery there is no preexisting fear to play off of..
I find movies such as Silence of the Lambs, The Chainsaw Massacre (original), Peeping Tom (1960) and Cape Fear (1962) far more frightening they play on mans inhumanity to man and the depths of psychosis a human mind can reach for the scares.. Considering 2 of the 3 are based on actual things people did to each other those are far more frightening.. I also find originals especially black and whites to be far more scary there is something about watching a horror movie without color that makes it more intense..

Yeah, I'm with you and James. It's funny because I thought The Exorcist was the scarriest movie of all time. I wouldn't let my son watch it because he'd be too scared. I watched it again last year and it was pretty boring. I actually think the next presidential race is a lot more horrifying.

Wait until you get a lode of what really exist you will **** your pants and then some. Some of those so called movies were taken from true life experiences. Could you imagine fighting against the dead. You'll wish you never knew they existed. There is much evil in this old old world . Good luck!

I can relate.
Raised catholic, and watched The Exorcist at age 6. Needless to say, it scared the crap out of me for the next few years. Always wondering if I could get possessed and how horrifying it would be.
Now, as an atheist... I laugh at it.

It's called growing up ... anyways reality is pretty scary. Look at all the horrible people using religion as a hate-tool.

Well, since I don't believe in Hell, my fear of zombies has grown exponentially. I mean, where are they going to go? Dawn of the Dead gave me nightmares.

You might be desensitized to it, but...that doesn't mean it doesn't affect you subconciously.
Be careful with what seeds you plant in your mind because they will eventually grow into something that you might not like.
Peace...
