So I have had a job at a certain healthy fast food restaurant for the past 9 months and recently, my manager hired some new people that I had to train. My boss has always told other employees and myself that I am the best worker, but recently I found out that she pays other, newer, workers more because they are either a few years older or have come from another job and demanded a certain wage. I myself have a asked for a wage increase and my boss said they would give it to me after exams but that didn't happen. Some of these new workers really suck and she knows it! Any advice on what I should do?? By the the way, I'm making $6.75.

Unfortunately if you like your job you need to confront your supervisor again demanding a higher wage, and you need to be willing to walk out the door and get another job, you are making almost minimum wage and if you are a GREAT worker you will get a better job where they do appreciate you. It is hard to make a change but by them not acknowledging you may be just what you need to move on. Good Luck.

I think there is no standard formula for salary. Some of the key factors that determine ones salary are educational level, work experience, skill, etc.

One other factor is "politics". If the boss knows that the employee will not leave the company because that employee may not be able to find another job easily, they will try to pay them the least possile as they know the employee will not leave even when they find out their pays are lower than they should be. Another instance is that the boss may have special relationship with the new employee (e.g., the new employee is the son of the boss best friend) so that the boss give them special treatment, less work and higher pay.

One way out is to have a straight talk with the boss, and ask for equality in pay. However, this may have adverse effect as the boss maybe unhappy of such question and dismiss the employee. So, I think the smart move is to look for another job that can give you the pay that you desire, then talk to your boss. If the boss is not willing to make any adjustment, then you can leave and take the other job. Think carefully, and decide what you should do. You have the last word.

Contact your local labor board. They cannot do this. Also if your store is a chain or corporation, they must have a corporate department for such complaints, get that info.
