For professional results nothing beats a Nikon! I have 2 D100 SLRs and a Cool pix 5700...both models are great. I also have a Canon 20D SLR....very easy to use, great image quality... I think Canon has pretty much built their empire on user friendly cameras....Also I have a Sony Carl Zeiss CyberShot...decent camera...good zoom qualities.
Over all I'd recommend a Nikon, but if you are set on Canon or Sony....I'd go Canon.

Here's a great site to compare any cameras. http://dpreview.com/reviews/sidebyside.asp
P&S both Sony & Canon pretty equal, I'd go Canon unless I owned a Sony laptop.
dSLR: Canon definately over Sony. Nikon has better images than Canon.
dSLR, no matter which one, has vastly superior picture quality over the P&S cameras.

While there is quite a difference in P&S and SLR cameras, Canon would be my choice from your list of two. Canon would still be my choice for most P&S price points, but Nikon would be my choice for most digital SLR's.

they are all durable if you are careful..
I like canon but sony is also good..
SLR's are ok, but more expensive, bigger, and harder to learn to use properly.
my suggestion
go to yahoo shopping

digital camera GUIDE
be sure to check titles on the left side

I'd like Canon best ... I had that digi-cam for 6 years now .. and nothing was wrong with it ... such a digi-cam like that can become a legend ... until now it's working perfectly ... but I still think that it depends on the person who's using it ... but still .....

Depends on what you are going to do with the pics. Internet use a dig for the rest you can use film. Film cost more.
