The car has around 57,000 miles. it hasn't been driven/started in about a year(possible engine problems?). I recently witnessed the owner cut off a tail pipe to give it away (just one, don't ask!), the owner doesn't know whats wrong with it at all. The interior is decent and should be able to be pieced back together even though its an ugly brown/beige. The color is black no major body issues, just some dents/paint need 2 be redone. Oh yeah and its an automatic so a tranny swap in the future would be nice. I mean how much in total will it be to fix it all up and make it nice?

Who knows how much it would cost, or whether it is worth it, without knowing what is actually wrong with it?

You could tow it to the mechanic and have them try to figure out what is wrong with it and what it might cost, to deal with those problems. That's gonna cost some money, but would be wise before just buying it, unless you have money to spend freely.

If you really want the car, like those models, were looking for one, etc. then it might be a good idea, depending on what is wrong with it.
If you really don't care for it, and just wanted a vehicle cheap to fix up, I probably wouldn't. It could be minor, but if it's not, you will either spend enough money that you could have bought a decent, running, used car or find out that it is total junk and not worth it at all, after you have already put in quite a bit of money.

Sounds like a frightful experience is in store for the future owner. Engines good used ones are hard to find 1990 is 18 years old. 1990 to 1993 motors interchange 1994 are slightly different plugs on injectors harness issues. Transmission to five speed is a huge undertaking. ECM is different as is the wiring harnesses. The owner gave away a muffler? there gos' $600 dollars to replace the exhaust with Stillen or Greedy. VQ30 de and the turbo VQ30 det are expensive to work on around 57,000 miles the all important timing belt needs to be changed at 60,000 miles I wonder what killed the car? No way if telling how much it would cost unless I hear the engine run let that sleeping dog lay. It might bite your walet.

Wow John Paul for being a nissan master tech you would know that the 90 300ZX either has the VG30DE or the VG30DETT NOT the VQ30, that was in Maxima's my friend. :)

You need to find out if its internal mechanical damage or if it is a dead sensor on the Z. If it is internal mechanical damage. the VG30DE is a very hard engine to work on. Most of the time requiring the engine to be removed. Not to mention can cost a few thousand dollars.

However if its just a sensor hindering it that can be much much easier to fix. That can still however cost a few hundred bucks. I would say if you have 200 dollars you don't really care about losing get the car. It could be a quick fix. If not I'm pretty sure you can get your 200 dollars back fairly easy. Honestly for 200 dollars, I would buy it and try to fix it.

1st let me say I just invested into a car that was really cheap, and I thought that I could fix up and come out a little better/cheaper. But what I should have asked myself first, is why is this person selling this car so cheap?, (remember you get what you pay for) , Second do I really wanna go through all the hassles of my car breaking-down (trust me its no fun sitting beside the road) - Trust Me DUDE !!! just save about 300 more and buy a decent car from a dealer if possible and save yourself the headache. (Oh yeah that car that I thought was so great actually is still running minus my current starter issue - yesterday I sat after work in the parking lot for over an hour just trying to start my car - after I flooded the car (tapping gas too much) I proceeded home and the exhaust from the fuel trailed my car ticking several motorists off!!!

Good Luck,
Let me know how everything turns out.

I would start by running the ecu codes on the car. That will atleast give up a head start on what could possilby be wrong. Also 300zx replacement parts are expensive. So this 200.00 car could cost you a mint, especially if its a TT. Good luck
