My roommate ifyou dont knwo by now, is addicted to oxycontin and is trying to ween themselves off of it. They do not do enough and havent been on it for more than a month (but been doing it for a month straight, everyday like 60+mg) once the high has worn off they complain of how shitty they feel and it is unbearable.

On monday they have surgery, soemthing with their bladder, using an endoscope and going up their urethra(?) to "check it out" i dont know the medical term for this. if oxy is stilll in their system is this safe and/or ok? it isnt a lot but it is still concerning

thanks

It is VITAL that he tell his anesthesiologist about his addiction. The TRUTH. ALL of the truth. There are drugs that we sometimes use that could throw him into withdrawal, and that would be quite unpleasant for everyone.

If he uses other drugs, the anesthesiologist needs to know that too. Different drugs interact in different ways with what we do.

This is literally "life and death" stuff. I could go into the pathophysiology behind it, but won't bore you with details.

He also needs to be aware of opiate-induced hypersensitivity. Chronic opiate use can cause people to feel pain more intensely than regular folks do. Another reason to get off the oxy.

Good luck to him.

He needs to be sure the anesthesiologist knows he's been doing the Oxycontin to avoid drug interactions, but the cystoscopy shouldn't be a problem.

Addiction is a choice. Nobody is forcing them to take this drug. Every time they take it, they are making a conscious choice. If you can convince them to make a different choice, the problem is solved. There is no "trying" to wean oneself. They are either choosing to continue taking the drug, or they are choosing not to. It is always a choice.

You should consult a doctor (as in, a real doctor in real life) about surgery, not a web forum.
