I have a friend who is always referring to his wife as 'my wife', not her real name, 'Bec'. It's like he is subliminally trying to emphasize that they are married and we aren't. We know they are married. He doesn't have to keep reminding us. Why is he doing this?

I think i should clarify. Its a good friend of mine. My partner and i see them regularly. I just find it strange that even though i know them both so well, even in a private conversation, he refers to her as 'my wife'!

Beats me. We have someone in our family who does the same thing, and we have all taken to calling this poor woman "MyWife" in place of her name.

He is probably just used to saying that and referring to her as his wife. You know who "Bec" is, but, in conversation with someone who does not know the wife's name, it is easier to just say "my wife".
Don't be paranoid - it probably means nothing! If it does, so what??
Those of us at Yahoo Answers can only speculate - Why don't you ask him if you really wonder?

I doubt it's a personal thing towards you. Married people just refer to each other as "my husband" or "my wife".
It started automatically after my husband and I were married. All of a sudden we were talking like "my husband this..." and "my wife that..."

Because that's what she is. My husband and I talk to so many people who don't know our spouse's name that we just refer to each other as "my husband" or "my wife". I do it with everyone except family.

There is nothing abnormal about this at all. The wife ,and husband may love it this way. So let it be.

He is probably proud and comfortable in his marriage and needs to constantly affirm this to the world. Maybe in time he will lighten up. Give him a break and let it go.

he sounds like an annoying know-it-all. its like he thinks his wife is his, a possession not a person. people like that annoy me too. he could ulternate between calling her bec and 'my wife'.

It isn't that he wants to remind you that they're married, he just can't remember her name most of the time.
