We both already have tattoos on our right shoulders.

this probably isn't going to help but i would suggest getting something relevant to the both of you. is their an experience that brought ya'll closer? is there a character that you both like? do you both love hearts? maybe even a pretty design around eachother's initials. your tattoo artist will be able to help you quite a bit too. when you choose her/him if they don't offer up suggestions i would find someone else (unless you are explicit about what you want).

First, find something you and your daughter have in common, say, a hobby. Then, search for a symbol of your shared hobby, and use that as the basis for your tattoo. Do lots of searching before deciding because you are going to be wearing this forever.
Put the same effort into researching your tattoo artist, as well.

Well I must say thats odd..though i do find it cool that you would do that, even though my mom and i have a strong relationship shes a little one sided and would never do that...i would suggest something small..since tattoos are permanent and if suddenly you decide it was a bad idea and wish to cover it up you can...i suggest a star with your initail in yours on the wrist or small of your back and the same for your daughter, just make sure the parlor is up to standard.

Oh, a friend of mine and her mom did this. What about chinese lettering? On your daughter the lettering will say daughter, and on you it will say mother. If you don't want that (that's what my friend did)...try a tattoo that means a lot to both of you.
Do you guys have an inside joke that can be symbolized in a picture? use that.

I would try to talk your daughter out of getting a tattoo. Remind her this is a permanent mark on her body... something that looks great on her 16 year old body, will look like crap in 30 years when she is 46 years old. Instead, why don't you do a mother/daughter spa day?

How about each of you have a half heart tatoo with Mom on hers and either her name or the word daughter on yours?

maybe a bird with different cordinating colors. http://www1.istockphoto.com/file_thumbview_approve/1713896/1/istockphoto_1713896_bird_tattoo.jpg those tattoos are really popular and cute! maybe you could have the bird with a piece of ribbon in its mouth with a "special" word written on it
