It's a dangerous situation when you do not know the dogs very well and the risk of being bitten is very high. I would suggest 2 or more people and use an object to get between them. No shouting unless it does any good. Usually shouting at fighting dogs is useless and only causes the situation to esculate. They think you are joining in! Be careful and never try to break up a fight by yourself. Moving toward them and in between with a chair or something and having another person grab one once they break apart.

you work at a petsmart one? no training? i didn't have much either. if they have direct stop use that (just note that it doesn't work most of the time), or if the dogs respond well too water use that.
at my petsmart (due to my managers law) we are not allowed to carry the water bottle or direct stop with us. stupid? yes.
honestly sometimes the best thing to do i grab the aggressor by the scruff and hold them and pull them off, being very careful to control the dog. while at the same time radioing for help. that doesn't always come.
however if you are not at all comfortable with that do not put yourself in danger. radio for help.
edit: not having it start in the first place would be a nice thought, but if this is the one i am thinking of, seventeen excited dogs in a twenty by ten room? there is no way to prevent them even when they see you as alpha.

the best way to break up a fight is to not have it start in the first place. if you work at the doggie daycare then you should know the dogs somewhat. you can also tell when dogs are about to fight they give off a look to the other dog challenging him. if you make a loud noise with your mouth like a ssssst sound and tap one of them on the butt it will break his concentration and also let him know that his behavior is unacceptable. if it continues to escalate then you can also spray them down with water. if you want more information on fighting dogs and how to break them up you should go to channel.nationalgeographic.com/channel/dogwhisperer and watch his show or read his books the man is absolutely amazing on teaching and training humans how to become the pack leader and how to control your pack. when you go to the site look for a show called the dog whisperer it worked wonders for me and all the dogs in my neighborhood. people from blocks away are comming over asking if i will train their dogs to behave like mine do. I have never had a fenced yard or shock collars for my dogs. If they go out of the yard all i have to do is say no and they turn around. they know that they are not allowed to leave the yard unless i tell them that they can. I only put them on a leash when going out in public away from my home. and i drape the leash around my neck and they never move from my side even when seeing another dog. i have a red nose pit bull and he has never been in a fight since i have had him. its all in the dominance factor and whos top dog. i seriously would check out his show i highly recomend it.

The best way is to either spray them with water or cover them with blanket, or run a chair between them.

have always found that spraying them down with the water hose works pretty effectively. It usually spooks them long enough to atleast walk away from one another. I hope this helps you out in the future!

I've heard that cold water on them from a hose will help break them up.

Keep a spray bottle filled with plain water and give them a few squirts when they misbehave.
