Katie, I just gave you a thumbs down to help you on your way to 50 (lol)!
Oh, what a laugh! I've got tears running down my face. Thanks for asking this q - it's really cheered me up.
Seriously (just for a moment, folks), whenever I ask a question I NEVER give anyone a thumbs down because if I'm stupid enough to ask the question, I should be ready for answers I might not like.
I agree that on R & S there is a distinct lack of "niceness" and the thumbs down are absolutely guaranteed if you dare to say something about Jehovah's Witnesses that they don't like (which is anything that doesn't agree with their beliefs).
Anyway, just to spread a little love around and uplift you, I'm going to give this question a star. It really is my pleasure!

Hey, think about the original use of thumbs up-down - aka arena where the enslaved Gladiators used to fight for their own lives - thumbs down would have a meaning of 'murder' the oponent you've gained a victory of. Thumbs up - let him live.
So, chear up and enjoy the modern society.
It's a personal choice if you choose to give the thumbs up-down to a person based on their answer....
Don't be too sensitive - it's just a Y! answers community. If you feel too sensitive, heck just find another less upsetting place where you can express your opinion. Don't take Y! Answers too seriously. Practice - Insensitivity.
So, get over it.

Uhummm! So your solution for a better community is more about the thumbs up vs. thumbs down instead of people stopping the brutal attacks on each other. Nice try, but you get a big fat buzzer from me.

I agree. I seem to get fewer thumbs down since I've changed my name from American Atheist back to Kathryn B, but I still get plenty of thumbs down.

I guess some folks are just too sensitive. I think there are some really young kids on here at times. I am an older lady so it takes a lot to ruffle my feathers.

If you honestly start crying just because someone didn't like your answer, you need to just suck it up. It's that person's opinion, you have yours, now get the hell over it

I don't think it's terribly important; I think you can tell right off roughly what sort of a reaction you're going to get (and who you're going to get it from.)

that should be the reason?!?
You want opinion that makes you feel good, vote for it.
If you want the truth, I will give it.
The final authority and truth comes from God.

Personally, I think the whole thumbs up and down thing is pretty useless.
