What I did to quit smoking...I went to the doctor and got a prescription for Wellbutren(sp?). It actually made the cigarettes taste like an ashtray in your mouth after one week. The to combat the habit of having something in your hands, I found a place online that sold the old school candy gum cigarettes and just held onto those until all the things just weened away. I had smoked for 14+ years. The patch helped me in the beginning in the mornings. Don't waste your time on the gum or lozenges.

Here's a different perspective... look at the statistics for everyone who have died from lung cancer as a result of smoking. Not to sound like a Health teacher but REALIZE all the harmful things that you are putting in your body... I'm sure you would try to help your friend to prevent them from doing anything detrimental to themselves, doing drugs, constantly drinking, etc... and surely you couldn't or would not want to see yourself doing it either... it's the same principle. Why would you? But unfortunately, consequences of cigarettes are not seen right away, aka you won't die at an instant from one cigarette, and that's why some people just brush off lung cancer stories as if it would somehow skip them.
A 14 year old was on the verge of going into high school. His dream he said was to play football and hopefully get a scholarship and be the first to graduate from high school in his family and hopefully get into high college. At age13 he was diagnosed with lung cancer and during the summer before high school he celebrated his birthday and looked forward to playing for the football team, but passed away. This was JUST because of second hand smoke.
My bosses father died because of lung cancer. He said it wasn't so bad he was finally resting because he came to accept death and did not fear it. It was the fact that he laid in the hospital bed with an oxygen tank and a hole in his throat struggling for every breath. He said that not once did he tell him he loved him, and when this opportunity came, it was so hard for his father to gasp the air to say just three words. He was only 57.
I think the last thing we all want to do is be lying in a hospital bed, watching our kids and family cry and ask "why" for doing something we could have made the decision not to do.
There's support clinics and motivational people out there, I know you can do it.

If you wear your favorite perfume, that may deter you a little from wanting to smoke, because the smoke smell will be on you - and you won't want to smell like that. The running cost of smoking is also something to do away with - what is it, 5 dollars a pack?!

Try nicotine replacement therapy, NRT.
You can use gum, patch, or inhaler. Right now I am using an inhaler. I have not smoked since Wednesday.
