http://www.ancestry.com is one of the best but has a hefty subscription fee (for most of its databases).

Depending upon your age, when your parents were born, etc., you can check the Social Security Death Index (the latest is about 70 years ago, so is no use to persons such as myself), Ellis Island websites, county courthouses, military records...

You'll enjoy the SSDI, Social Security Death Index, it can be found at familysearch.org, rootsweb.com and ancestry.com. You may also find interment.net and findagrave.com useful.

you do a lot with www.ask.com,, and even www.google.com is a big help,, there is even one named www.ancestry.com,, oh and www.lycos.com has a person search
