First, rule out any health causes with a trip to the vet. Next check the environment for anything that could lend a bad odor and eliminate it. Brush your dogs daily with a soft brush. Lastly, bathe your dog from time to time (depends on environment and breed; 2-3 times a year for your breed).

I had a chihuhua too and he had the same exact problem.. I think it may just be with the breed. Also when dogs get neutered/spayed that can also cause a hormone imbalance which causes the odor. The smell comes from under their skin. There is nothing that you can do

I have found that if you bath a dog too often it develops an odor because you remove the natural skin oils.
Except your dog is actually dirty, a daily brushing is enough to keep a groomed look. This is not a chore, it is playing with your dog.
It will take some trial and error to determine the right interval between baths.

Check your dogs teeth. The odor may be coming from the mouth and not the body. Any strong odor on a dog should be checked by a vet.

Take it to the vet, and have a fecal float done. I had this happen to my chi, and it was because her glands at her anus were clogged up, and it caused her to have a really bad smell. You can do this at home, but it is very very very disgusting! If you would like to know how, email me @ kaber32@yahoo.com. Hope it works for you, cause it did for me, and I was so glad not to smell the funk...

Have your vet check for an ear infection. That was a problem with one of my dogs. My vet prescribed a shot and some ear cleansing solutions.

Could be gas.

What type of food are you feeding? May need to change and see if that helps.
