What do breeders do with puppies that don't sell? Or is this an issue?

You can negotiate the price of a car, why not dogs?

For everyone who says go to the pound.....I know, and thank you for your advice.

Sure you can. But an animal is a living creature. Not an inanimate object. Would you negotiate the price of a child? (which is what you animals becomes) Why not shop around for prices, compare breeders. If you are buying to show then you will probably pay more. If you just want a specific breed for a pet than find one that does not have papers. I have a Shi-Tzu. One of his parents was papered, the other one wasn't so the breeder could not get fulled papered price. I only paid $250 for my "baby" when most around here go for $450 and up. I don't know about negotiating a price but you can certainly shop around because some breeders are very high and do nothing more than lower price ones.

If a breeder is willing to negotiate than they are probably giving you the weaker/runt of the litter. They may drop the price on the pup with the least potential for show. Also some breeders drop prices by keeping your dogs breeding rights or having you have your dog fixed.

Everything is negotiable.
When I bought my first dog full breed,
they wanted 250, and i could only afford 200.oo.
The dog and I fell in love with each other,
I left a deposit, and when the dog was ready, old enough
they met me 1/2 way.
And then when they found out it was my birthday,
they let me buy him for the $200.oo

My last dog was $600.oo

Depends on the breeder.
My breeders have always made sure the dog and I were a good match before letting go of the dog.

Good luck, and you go look at lots of liters,
and find the dog that is meant for you.
It will come to you, and the breeder will know it.
And then you can work on the price.

Remember to figure in shots, and food, and crate, and bedding..........and the vet check.

you can try, some breeders have a set price, say $400 and they know they can get it for the dog so if you dont wanna pay that, oh well someone else will, usually if they have only one or two left they might go down slightly in price. it depends on the breeder and if you are buying it from a person who breeds or a pet store thats selling them. pet stores have set standard prices and will hardly negotiate but if its a person, then you can always try to get a lower price.

I sell chihuahuas and yes sometimes I do negotiate a price. I do it when I think someone will make a wonderful pet owner, but maybe they are on a limited income. I know they can pay for the shots, food, etc but to come up with a large amount all at once for a pup is just too much for them. Sometimes I will give a pup to a senior that has lost a spouse and I know that a puppy will bring love and joy to their lives and keep them from being lonely.

You can negotiate anything if the seller is willing to negotiate. All puppies get sold. At least if they are cute little hairy puppies they do. I'm sure some people have some that don't sell. But most toy breeders have waiting lists of people who want a puppy.

i bought my bulldogs always from the same breeder in germany ( i lived there before ).
She breeds bulldogs since 30 years and she don't have much litters anymore (maybe 1 till 2 a year ) .
She would never negotiate a price .

Not usually, show breeders price their pups based on quality, however if they have an older puppy then they may negotiate. If you're talking backyard breeders, I guess it depends on the person.

Yes you can bargain with breeders.

Usually very young pups most breeders are unwilling to bargain because at that age they can usually easily sell them.

Older pups around 3 months and up you can usually bargain. Just ask if they are willing to lower the price. They will either say yes or no.

Breed plays a big roll also. The small designer mix mutts are popular now and may be hard to bargain for these dogs also.
