They rarely ever break the skin. That's the great thing about chihuahuas. They just don't have the jaw strength to maul anyone.

Oh yes, they can break skin. Years ago, my mother had a 3lb chi that bit the insurance man on the ankle. He broke the skin and the man said it was okay, no big deal. My mother was horrified that her dog did that and she told the man that she would pay any and all medical expenses. Then she called the city impound to see what needed to be done. They took the report, filed it and told her they would let her know if there were any other legal oblications to the incident.
There were none, thank God!
The man went to the doctor and he was fine. So there was a doctor's report on the incident.
The dog was up-to-date on his shots and had his rabies vaccine. He was about 3-4 years old then.
Please see if you can contact the young man to do a follow-up on his condition.

You are responsible...Did the bite break the skin? If the skin was broken the dog should be quarantined. You should have called your vet right then or animal control. Just because your dog may be mostly indoors that dosen't mean they can't get attacked or catch something from another animal. From now on I would suggest you put the dog on a leash when your expecting company or train him better.
I had a golden that got out of his pen because my husband didn't get it locked all the way. My dog was sniffing around another dog, when the little neighbor boy tried to get him for me. He walked up behind a dog that was intent on another dog and grabbed his collar. My dog bit him out of reflex action since he was startled. He didn't attack, he bit and walked off. Luckly the boy was all right. I immediately called animal control to report it and then took my dog to my vet to have him quarantined until they found out if all was okay.

Does your dog have a history of biting people it doesnt know? You should call and make sure he is okay and offer to pay any medical bills so that you dont get sued or have to put your dog down. Maybe you should start locking your dog in another room when you have visitors . . . .

Nothing unless the guy goes to the doctor (who have to report bites) then you'll be contacted by a health officer. Hopefully your dog is current on his rabies shot and you have proof of it. The dog could be quarantined if no proof exists.

Did he say anything to you afterwards? If I were in your situation, I'd write a note explaining how sorry I was and if there was anything I could do to help.

Did he bite his pepperoni? You had better train the dog not to 'guard' the door. I saw an episode of 'It's me or the dog' on animal planet about the exact same thing.
