It really depends on what your day to day demands are, and what your body can handle.
Do you have kids? Are you married? Live in girl or boyfriend?
When I was in the Air Force, I worked in the Security Forces career field. I was a shift worker. I worked the flightline, I worked the entry gates, I worked patrols. Over the 8 years I was in, I worked every shift (days, swings, and mids). I enjoyed swings and mids the best, due to the fact that swingshift (when we were in 8 hour shifts) started at 2pm and ran until 10pm and mids went from 10pm until 6am. Was it hard to stay awake at night? Sometimes. But the fact we didn't have to deal with rush hour traffic, the higher ups in our unit, and basically the majority of the base, they were great shifts to work.
Now, I'm a civilian again, and work a regular 9-5 job. While I love my job, there are times I miss the night shift. I'm a night owl so I stay up late anyways.
I'll say this much, shift work is hard on the family life. Unless you have someone who works the same schedule as you do, and they understand what you're going through, your spouse won't understand, which can make family life at home a little rough at times. My husband and I worked opposite flights when we were both in the Air Force. We went days of only seeing each other in passing. But we were comfortable with it because our schedules allowed us to see each other, at least for a few minutes each day. Now, if you have kids, you risk not seeing them as much as you would like depending on your schedule and theirs. Plus, with the shift work, you won't be out in the blazing heat. Once the sun goes down, it cools down, even in the summer.
You didn't say what type of work you would be doing, so it's hard to gauge what shift would be better, but I'd say go with what you think you would be comfortable with, and the one that wouldn't affect your personal life too much.

You did'nt mention what job...certain factors may be considered, say, traffic. Anyway, day shift is still the best. Why? because humans are not nocturnal beings. People function best while the sun is up...and their energy wanes as the sun sets...this is why night shift workers receive a premium...for allowing their body to function at night.

If you have children in grade school....day shift.
If you don't have children , any shift that allows you to run necessary errands and get some sleep after you get home from work.
If you need extra money...graveyard shift (10 p.m. 6.00 a.m.)because they generally offer an incentive differential....Everything there depends on your covering for small children at home.
Everything depends on what's going on in your life. If you are a college student , allow for sleep, class, study, and social time...is there's any left
