If people give up smoking, they will keep better health, so the government will have to spend less on their healthcare. So it balances out.

Our government will always spend more money than they have regardless. We are trillions of dollars in debt now, and to who exactly? Anyway I am a smoker and it is a bad habit I picked up when I was a teenager. So I actually agree that people would live longer and in better health. However.....Cigarettes are LEGAL! If you dont want them in society then make them illegal and help people that are addicted. Then get ready for the same problems that came up during prohibition - wouldnt that be a treat? LOL If nonsmokers are going to continue to attack smokers then why not hit up EVERYTHING that makes the nation have bad health. Obesity has become an epidemic right? Why not tax the s**t out of all candy bars and fast food joints? Or how about if you dont use a condom during sex that would be illegal - give someone an STD and get arrested? Just a thought.

Of course they can't afford to pay OTHER taxes. The taxes on a pack of cigarettes is paid by the consumer indirectly when he buys his tobacco. If the taxes were lower, the smoking taxpayer would have more money with which to pay other taxes. The dumba** democrats who pass these tax hikes to get people to quit smoking don't realize the difficulties some people face in trying to quit. Income taxes go up, property taxes go up, taxes on our energy go up, sales taxes go up, fuel prices go up, food prices go up. And if you're on a limited or fixed income with kids, you're already stretching your dollars tight. But to a smoker, needing a cigarette is like a non-smoker feeling the urge to eat three times a day. It's not an urge to easily ignore. Quitting nicotine is as hard as quitting cocaine.

Smokers pay way more in taxes than will ever be used to treat their smoking-related illnesses on the NHS later on.

If the whole country gave up at once, the government's financial plans would collapse, and we would all probably end up paying an extra 2-3p in the pound on income tax

Smokers are going to give up smoking because of high taxes on tobacco like SUV owners are going to buy a Prius because fuel costs increase. We already DO tax fuel, btw.

I smoked for 30 years before i decided to quit 4 years ago. I was always careful to not smoke in others homes around babies and in no smoking zones. I have never regreted quitting but these smoking bans are getting out of hand. Every time you start an auto you emit enough toxic gases to kill anybody exposed to them in an enclosed area. Maybe we should outlaw driving in public areas.

Don't worry, it's not a problem, they spend way more than they take in in taxes now. They'll just borrow more and accumulate even more debt that we can never pay off, until one that the whole economy collapses.

Reading from all the vengeful smokers really makes me understand how powerful nicotine addiction really is. They tax us to death anyway, whether they charge us on one thing or another can't make a difference.

They could tax the people that don't speak or write proper English. That would anger people that are taxed. Eventually, they would learn the language and we'd have a smarter society.
