First thing to realize is that it is Africa. That means normal rules of civility and warfare are not the norm. They (and yes I know this is a generalization, which just so happens to be true for the most part.) consider atrocities to be a normal means of controling the opposition.

The Sudanese government is islamic and has in the past hosted Osama himself. They ended up kicking him out because he was too much of a liability but there is still a certain amount of support for/from him as well as other unsavory types. It's a lawless land full of corruption.

The government forces have slaughtered the christians in the south and therefore the oppressed have formed militias to counterattack.

The African Union came in as peacekeepers to break up the fighting. But they don't have a large budget to pay the peacekeepers all the extras so they said they were quitting (AU) mission and suggested the UN take over (though it would be the same units and countries on the ground.) The UN (mostly with US financing) would pay excessive amounts of money to all the countries and soldiers involved.

The Sudanese government told the UN they weren't welcome because they're basically ineffective anyway and because the government doesn't want interference in their genocide. The Sudanese government doesn't want anything even close to the US involved as it is an anti american country.

So, the world is left to decide whether or not they really want to prop up an anti-western genocidal government or overthrow another Islamic government, even with the foreknowledge that any replacement will be at least as corrupt as that which it replaced, though more likely be trained in corruption by the UN which is the expert on that subject as well as ineffectiveness.

Clear as mud?

I have explained this a thousand times before. A group of militants supported by the US want a breakaway state in Darfur because oil reserves were found and the US will find it easier to get better terms from a bunch of uneducated idiots rather than the more seasoned Sudanese government, This has led to civil war and this is to be expected.
The below is the standard CIA version. Mine is the straight un brainwashed version.
